Broncolor returns to Hasselblad for UK distribution

Hasselblad has announced today that it will resume distribution of Broncolor lighting from the 1st of July, aftter originally losing the account to JP Distribution, the official importer of rival Mamiya in the UK. The move can be seen as part of a global strategy. Hasselblad 'replaced' Broncolor with the distribution for Profoto lighting in the UK, but the Sweden-based lighting manufacturer eventually formed their own distribution company, which now also import and distribute Induro tripods in the UK. Profoto are distributed in the US by MAC group, part-owners of both Mamiya and Induro.

Broncolor turns to Hasselblad for its UK distribution
Hasselblad is set to become sole distributor of broncolor lighting products in the UK.

’We will use the same approach with bron as we have with the new-look Hasselblad UK’ - Chris Russell-Fish, Hasselblad UK MD and Global Sales and Marketing Director

Chris Russell-Fish, Hasselblad UK MD and global sales and marketing director, announced the move following months of negotiation with the Swiss-based lighting manufacturer.

Hasselblad will take over from JP Distribution on July 1st and promises ‘a dynamic array of new ideas and solutions‘ for bron customers nationwide in coming months.

Said Russell-Fish: “I believe we can do a great job for bron users in the UK. Like Hasselblad products, bron equipment sits at the top end of the market. We plan to make a great deal of noise in coming weeks and months around this excellent lighting range.”
Russell-Fish has appointed photo-lighting expert Chris Burfoot as the new broncolor UK manager.

Burfoot, who first started ‘working with light’ in the Eighties said: “Our objective is to create far more awareness around the award-winning bron brand and focus hard on customer service and support for existing users. We also plan a programme of ‘hands-on’ open days with broncolor partners in a non-selling environment – mirroring the success of the popular ‘Hasselblad Studiodays’ programme, and under the name of 'The beauty of broncolor'.

This premium lighting brand has been built on a rock solid foundation of quality, consistency and reliability. The new-look bron customer care programme will work in exactly the same way as Hasselblad’s renowned ‘Hasselbuddy’ customer care support.”
Hasselblad UK owns the London-based Pro Centre, the photo-equipment rental company, but Russell-Fish insists the bron distribution deal will be no threat to any other brand they work with.

He said: “The Pro Centre acts completely independently as a rental centre. This will simply be an additional line. Bron will be a completely separate entity for us in the same way as our new Hasselblad studio and Didgeridoo services. And just as we have developed energetic new programmes for Hasselblad customers in the UK, we will do the same with bron over time. There will be a separate bron customer care and maintenance team in place in the near future.”

Hasselblad is currently in talks with broncolor with a view to new product launches.

Benro launches four new gimbal heads

Kenro the UK distributor of Benro tripods and accessories has today announced four new gimbal heads for photographers using super-telephoto lenses. The heads range in terms of load from the GHA which weighs 0.47kg has a maximum load of 15kg (33lbs), and an RRPP of £220 inc. VAT through to the top of the range GH3, which is claimed to be able to support up to 25kg (55lbs) and will retail for £584.99 inc VAT. The GH2 shown below weighs 1.44 kg, has a maximum load of 23 kg and an RRP of £439.99. All the heads include an Arca-Swiss compatible quick-release clamp.

Benro is the sister company to Induro (and distributed by Profoto), which offer the same range of heads (GHBA, GHB1 and GHB2, though Induro haven't as yet announced a GHB3), so there could be some price advantage to the Benro models. It's also worth noting that the Induro models (and now these from Benro) are made for them by Wimberley.

Leaf announce Raw Converter 1.2.6

Leaf Imaging has announced an update to their Raw Converter software, which allows the conversion of Leaf .mos files in Adobe Camera Raw (and although not quoted Lightroom too). The latest update adds support for Leaf Aptus-II 12, Leaf Aptus-II 12R, Leaf Aptus-II 12 for AFI/HY6 in addition to earlier backs and those from Mamiya including the DM56, DM40, DM33, DM28, DM22. The download is free and available now.

Canon Fisheye EF 15mm f/2.8 discontinued

We've just heard from a spokesperson at Canon UK that the outstanding EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye lens has been discontinued. The situation is a little different in the US however, but my guess is once stock has disappeared from dealer's shelves that'll be it till the new EF 8-15mm f/4L starts shipping from Japan.

B&H Photo is still showing the EF 15mm f/2.8 in stock at $749, but I can't tell you how long that will last.

Panasonic unwrap Lumix GF3

After the launch recently of the G3 comes the expected announcement of the GF3, the smallest of the Lumix G-series models to date. These cameras are popular not only for their stills, but for video too. The Lumix models record up to 29 minutes, which is much more compelling than the Olympus Pens' somewhat restricted video (7 minutes on the E-PL2 in HD - 720p). But, note the Full HD 1080i (interlaced) claim of this new model, that's not the same as 1080p, which is preferred. We hope to have more information on that after we've received a standard-production sample for review.

UPDATE: Also note the lack of a hotshoe, though there's a built-in flash, that means no optional EVF. This is much more like a digital compact (albeit with interchangeable lenses) than any previous mirrorless offering.

Panasonic roll out Leica 25mm (50mm) f/1.4

Panasonic has announced a Leica-branded 25mm f/1.4 (50mm equivalent). The lens is Leica designed, but made by Panasonic at the Yamagata lens plant - the factory was said to have been damaged by the recent earthquake in Northern Japan.

Interesting use of Nikon-esqe 'nano' element coating to reduce flare and ghosting. There's no IS as some detractors are bound to point out, but there's absolutely no need for it in a lens like this.

The optical construction consists of nine elements in seven groups, that's unusual as most even high end 50mm's adopt seven or sometimes eight elements in total. Cheaper models, the modern 50mm f/1.8 type, for instance, use six elements. Of those nine, two are aspherical (glass moulded, not ground) and one is made from ultra high refractive (UHR) index glass.

There's no word as yet on price or availability.

UPDATE. A spokesperson for Panasonic has confirmed to the DJP the lens will be available in August at approximately £539.99 (inc VAT), or just $599.95 in the US.

Sony announce firmware update version 2.0 for A33 and A55

Sony has announced the latest firmware update (version 2.0) will be available from June 20 for the SLT A33 and A55 DSLRs.

Version 2.00 firmware update for α33, α55

Available from June 20th, a firmware upgrade for existing α33 and α55 cameras by Sony adds several creative and operational enhancements.

Support for the ‘Picture Effect’ function featured on the new α35 is now offered. High-Speed Synch is supported during wireless operation with a compatible external flash (only α55). Ergonomics are further improved with revised menus and a new mode that lets users switch off shooting parameters overlaid on screen for clear, uncluttered composition.

The camera’s Digital Level Gauge can also be displayed when shooting via the optional CLM-V55 external LCD monitor. Frequently used features can now be custom-assigned to the D-RANGE button for rapid, menu-free access.

Schneider Group shows 12-percent growth

Schneider Group are reporting in increase in revenue approaching 12-percent over last year. The optical company is behind the B+W filter brand and makes lenses for high-end cameras and compacts.

The group’s revenues grow by almost 12 % in 2010. Investments in R&D and new production technologies lead to an increase in sales. The outlook is also positive for the current year.

BAD KREUZNACH, 8 June 2011. Jos. Schneider Optische Werke GmbH from Bad Kreuznach and its subsidiaries are on a growth path. Total revenues were up by 11.7 % in 2010 over the previous year, totaling 86.6 million euros. The company’s operations at its Bad Kreuznach headquarters contributed 48.8 million euros to total revenues (20.1 % higher than in 2009), a particularly pleasing result. Both figures exceed the revenues the Group achieved before the general economic crisis. “This is an ongoing trend; we expect a positive development in the current year, too,” says Dr. Josef Staub, CEO of the Schneider Group.

In recent years, the company has stepped up its investments in the development of new products and production plants as well as in its core team. That is now paying off. The company’s site in Bad Kreuznach has returned to three-shift operation. Thanks to new production technologies, the company is now able to make even more precise lenses, thus securing its competitive edge. Demand has risen in the area of industrial solutions in particular, mainly thanks to a new generation of lenses for surface inspection used especially in the capital goods industry to monitor production. “The decision to push innovation was right. We intend to expand our position on the international markets and further intensify our sales activities to achieve this,” says Dr. Josef Staub. The group’s key customers are currently in Asia.
