media_1347438054777.png

As widely leaked over the internet in the run up to the official product announcement, Sony has duly announced the 24-megapixel full-frame A99 and RX1 as well as the 16-megapixel NEX-6 models, but, interestingly, the firm has announced the development of a Zeiss 1,4/50mm ZA SSM. Details are scant but the new lens adopts ultrasonic focusing (SSM) and a 72mm filter thread. According to the press release, the new 50mm will be available in the Spring of 2013.

Sony announces 500mm f/4 super telephoto

media_1328963223859.png

Sony has officially announced the long awaited 500mm f/4 at Japan's CP+ show, which was shown as a prototype at CES last year, alongside mock ups of the SLT-A77 and SLT-A33. There's no mention of the price in the press release (see below), though some sites are quoting $13,000 / 13,000 Euros.

For those that just can't wait (or afford) the Sony lens, Sigma's 500mm f/4.5 EX DG (not HSM unfortunately) could be a serious alternative at a fraction of the price, just £3,779.95 (Jessops online price).

Press release:

Closer encounters with new 500mm super-telephoto 08 February 2012
Rugged, pro-focused SAL500F40G lens from Sony for A-mount SLT and DSLR cameras

Longest-ever focal length G Lens from Sony
Bright F4.0 aperture for superior light gathering
Nano AR Coating on optical surfaces for flawless still images and HD video
Compatible with SteadyShot INSIDE featured in all α cameras
New SSM drive circuit for quick, accurate autofocus
Rugged dust- and moisture-resistant design: ideal partner for SLT-A77
Enhanced handling and operability

Serious photographers can pull distant subjects closer with a powerful new 500mm (equivalent to 750mm with APS-C camera) super-telephoto lens from Sony.

The SAL500F40G is ideal for sports, wildlife and demanding imaging applications that require extreme magnification with uncompromised optical performance.

The SAL500F40G is the longest fixed focal length G Lens from Sony to date. Whether you’re shooting detail-packed stills or Full HD video, you’ll enjoy frame-filling close-ups with flawless resolution. With a bright F4.0 maximum aperture, its excellent light gathering power allows the use of faster shutter speeds to broaden shooting opportunities.

The ruggedly-engineered SAL500F40G copes effortlessly with tough photo assignments. Focusing ring and front/rear joints are protected by interlocking seals that shrug off dust and moisture, even when you’re shooting outdoors in driving rain or arid desert conditions. This weather-resistant design makes the SAL500F40G a perfect partner for the SLT-A77 (α77) Translucent Mirror camera that offers serious photographers similarly ruggedized performance.

Like all other A-mount lenses, the SAL500F40G is compatible with the SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilisation system that’s featured in every α Translucent Mirror and DSLR camera from Sony. Depending on shooting conditions, camera model and settings, you’ll enjoy camera-shake blur compensation that’s equivalent to approximately 4.5 stops (max.) in shutter speed.

Inside, the advanced optical design of the SAL500F40G includes 11 elements in 10 groups, including three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements. It’s also the first G Lens from Sony to feature advanced new coating process that ensures crisper, clearer images. Exclusive to Sony, the ground-breaking Nano AR Coating process cuts internal reflections by up to 80% compared with previous models. Resulting images are brilliantly crisp and clear, with dramatically reduced lens flare and ghosting. Flare is reduced still further by the carbon fibre lens hood that’s lined with black velvet fibres to absorb incident light.

Razor-sharp autofocus performance makes the SAL500F40G ideal for capturing an athlete’s explosive movements or the unpredictable flutter of wild birds. The high-torque SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) features a new drive circuit, ensures rapid, responsive AF with up to 4x faster object tracking than conventional Sony lenses.

Serious enthusiasts will also welcome a strong emphasis on enhanced handling and ergonomics. Four focus hold buttons are spaced around the lens barrel for easy operation in any position. They’re complemented by a two-way DMF (Direct Manual Focus) mode button and focus range switch for positive, fumble-free operation when you’re shooting under pressure.

Built to order, the SAL500F40G super-telephoto lens from Sony is available in Europe from late March2012.

New E-mount 30mm macro lens (“E 30mm F3.5 Macro”)

The versatility of the α E-mount compact camera system grows with new style-matched accessories to expand your shooting possibilities even further. Joining the range of E-mount interchangeable lenses, the SEL30M35 is currently the world’s lightest1 life-size macro lens (138g) for interchangeable-lens cameras. This high-quality 30mm F3.5 macro lens features a 1:1 magnification ratio and minimum working distance of just 2.4 cm, making it ideal for capturing detail-packed close-ups of small subjects like flowers and insects. It also offers smooth, quiet autofocus operation whether you’re shooting stills or HD video. The macro lens is supplied with a matching lens hood.

Sony introduces world’s smallest, lightest* interchangeable lens camera with APS-C sized sensor

Easy-to-use α NEX-C3 with 16.2 effective megapixels, HD video and friendly new interface

DSLR-quality images with 16.2 effective megapixel Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor
Intuitive new ‘Photo Creativity’ interface for jargon-free adjustment of picture settings
In-camera ‘Picture Effect’ with real-time preview

Multi-frame imaging techniques including 3D Sweep Panorama, Auto HDR and Handheld Twilight mode
Optional accessories including compactHVL-F20S travel flash and 30mm F3.5 E-mount macro lens

* Among interchangeable-lens digital cameras with APS-C size image sensor, as of 8th June 2011

The new α NEX-C3 by Sony is the world’s smallest, lightest interchangeable lens digital camera in its class.
Offered in a choice of stylish colours, the NEX-C3 features an attractive new body design that combines a satisfyingly solid metal top casing with an easy-to-use streamlined grip shape. Reducing the size of main circuitry shrinks camera body weight to just 225g – that’s almost 6% less than the NEX-3.
Image quality, functions and usability of the NEX-C3 also surpasses that of the NEX-3.

Resolution of the large Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor is boosted to 16.2 effective megapixels, capturing stills and 720p HD video with breath-taking clarity. The large, DSLR-sized sensor also lets you produce pro-quality ‘bokeh’ background defocus effects, whether you’re shooting HD video or stills.
Even if you’re not familiar with specialist photo jargon, the NEX-C3 puts sophisticated picture controls within easy reach, whether you’re shooting stills or HD video. The intuitive new Photo Creativity interface replaces technical terms like ‘aperture’, ‘exposure value’ and ‘white balance’ with the friendlier and more intuitive ‘background defocus’, ‘brightness’ and ‘colour’.

There’s no need to dig into confusing menu options or guess their effect on your composition. Just turn the camera’s rear-mounted control wheel and instantly see the effect of your settings previewed on screen. If you wish, two or more different settings can be combined to create more sophisticated creative effects.

A new in-camera ‘Picture Effect’ setting lets users add extra impact to stills or HD video during shooting, without the worry of editing images afterwards. ‘Picture Effect’ options include Partial Colour, Retro Photo, Pop Colour, High Contrast Monochrome, Posterisation, High-key and Toy Camera. There’s also a ‘Soft Skin’ effect that removes wrinkles and blemishes from portrait subjects.

Tilting for comfortable viewing at any angle, the high contrast 7.5cm Xtra Fine LCD features TruBlack screen technology for high-contrast images with rich, deep blacks. It’s a great way to compose shots and judge the effect of adjusting picture settings, even when you’re viewing outdoors in bright sunlight.
Advanced multi-frame imaging technologies by Sony broaden the possibilities of the NEX-C3 further still.3D Sweep Panorama captures extra-wide images in 3D to enjoy on your 3D TV. Auto HDR ‘stacks’ a high speed burst of three successive exposures to capture extreme shadow and highlight details in a single frame. Similarly, Handheld Twilight and Anti-Motion Blur modes automatically combine six exposures to capture smooth, low-noise images: this avoids hand-blur and subject-blur when you’re shooting in available light.

The NEX-C3 works even harder to capture more amazing images and HD video between battery charges. Improved energy efficiency boosts battery stamina to a generous 400 still shots per charge – over 20% more than the NEX-3/NEX-5.

Sony announce A35 DSLR

media_1307516238564.png

Sony introduces α35 (SLT-A35) with Full-time Continuous AF powered by Translucent Mirror Technology

Light, compact camera with 16.2 effective megapixels and new in-camera ‘Picture Effect’

    •    16.2 effective megapixels Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor
    •    Exclusive Translucent Mirror Technology by Sony for high- speed, full-time continuous AF with stills and AVCHD movies
    •    Up to 7fps in Tele-zoom High Speed Shooting mode with approximately 1.4x magnification
    •    Ultra-high quality, low noise images with up to ISO 12800
    •    In-camera ‘Picture Effect’ enhances stills or HD video

Light, compact and easy to use, the new α35 (SLT-A35) by Sony brings pro-style shooting speeds and generous creative options to photographers of all abilities.

As introduced on the acclaimed α33 and α55, Translucent Mirror Technology by Sony allows high-speed shooting with responsive, accurate continuous autofocus - whether you’re shooting stills or Full HD movies.

Making its debut on the α35, Tele-zoom High Speed Shooting magnifies a central portion of the image area to give an effective approximately 1.4x magnification while you shoot at up to 7 fps. Providing continuous tracking autofocus of still or moving objects, it’s ideal for capturing fast-moving sports, children’s faces or distant subjects with a high-speed burst of frames. There’s also a rapid 5.5 fps drive mode that offers full-resolution continuous shooting with tracking AF.

With a resolution of 16.2 effective megapixels, the newly-developed Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor delivers stunningly detailed, low-noise still and HD video images. Complementing the sensor’s extremely high resolution and sensitivity, the powerful BIONZ processor cleans and optimises image data to assure flawless images with rich, natural colour reproduction. With a maximum sensitivity of ISO 12800, it’s possible to capture beautifully natural still images and HD video in low light where other cameras struggle.

Advanced Quick AF Live View continuously displays a real-time output from the main image sensor during still- or Full HD video shooting. Light is partially directed from the translucent mirror to an AF sensor to permit non-stop precision TTL phase-detection autofocus – a benefit that’s not possible with traditional DSLR cameras.

Whether you’re shooting stills or AVCHD video, you’ll enjoy a superbly detailed view on the high-quality Xtra Fine LCD. TruBlack technology assures high-contrast images with rich, deep blacks – even if you’re shooting outside.

The high-resolution Tru-Finder offers a precision alternative to framing shots on the camera’s LCD. Offering an extremely detailed, high contrast image with full 100% field coverage, it’s ideal for live preview of picture effects and exposure adjustments. Accurate composition of landscapes, architecture and other scenes is enhanced by switchable grid lines.

Aside from its powerful imaging possibilities, the α35 is refreshingly accessible, even for photographers stepping up to their first interchangeable lens camera. The on-screen Help Guide gives a clear explanation of selected functions and how they’re used.

More advanced photographers, meanwhile, will welcome the top panel-mounted customisable button that allows instant recall of any of 14 frequently-used functions.

The α35 offers a new in-camera ‘Picture Effect’ setting that lets users add extra impact to stills or HD video during shooting, without the worry of editing images afterwards. Effects can be previewed on the camera screen, allowing photographers to see the result of a chosen effect instantly rather than post-shooting. The inspiring palette of artistic treatments includes Retro Photo, High-key, Toy Camera and Posterisation.

It’s also easy to produce dramatic Partial Colour effects, with a single colour picked out against the rest of the image in monochrome. This popular effect normally takes a series of painstaking steps to achieve with photo editing software: with the α35 it’s both automatic and instant.

Refinements in power consumption now boost the camera’s shooting stamina to a generous 440 still shots (approx. when using the rear LCD panel) between battery charges – that’s a 30% increase over its predecessor. The α35 is compatible with the full range of 32 A-mount interchangeable lenses from Sony that includes six Carl Zeiss lenses.

The new α35 digital camera with Translucent Mirror Technology by Sony is available from August 2011.

media_1303940421320.png

Argentinean photographer Alejandro Chaskielberg has tonight, 27 April 2011, been announced as this year’s winner of the illustrious L’Iris D’Or, the 2011 Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year. Over 105,000 images were entered into the 2011 competition from 162 countries. Chaskielberg was presented with the award during the Sony World Photography Awards Gala ceremony at the Odeon Leicester Square. Previously held at Cannes' prestigious Palais des Festivals, this is the first year that the awards have been held in London.

Beginning his career at the age of 18 as a photojournalist for a local newspaper, 34 year old Buenos Aires born Chaskielberg has spent 16 years developing a highly successful career as a photographer. His winning photographs offer a rare and insightful look into the lives of a community of islanders who live on the Parana River Delta. Devoting himself entirely to his ‘High Tide’ project, Chaskielberg lived with the islanders for two years, immersing himself in their daily life in order to document the way they live and work. Chaskielberg said of his series of striking night time portraits, “Using photography I have been able to present another version of the Parana River Delta and its community that has been photographically ignored throughout the years.”

Chaskielberg was chosen as the winner of the L’Iris D’Or by a panel of 12 judges. In addition to winning a $25,000 cash prize plus Sony digital SLR camera equipment, he joins previous L’Iris d’Or winners David Zimmerman, Vanessa Winship and Tommaso Ausili as a member of the World Photographic Academy. Attending the gala award ceremony at the Odeon Leicester Square, Chairman of the 2011 Honorary Judging Committee Francis Hodgson said, "The judging process is never straightforward when comparisons are made between imagery of so many different types on such a wide range of subjects. Yet this year's panel of judges found no great difficulty in agreeing to honour the powerful work of Alejandro Chaskielberg's series High Tide. These carefully directed pictures tell solid truths - about toil and communality and marginal economic survival - in a splendidly allusive way."

media_1303940482817.png

The Sony World Photography Awards Open Photographer of the Year title was awarded to Chan Kwok Hung for his stunningly dramatic image ‘Buffalo Race’. The 37 year old jewellery manufacturer from Hong Kong was at the awards ceremony to collect his $5,000 cash prize as well as Sony digital SLR camera equipment. Chan purchased his first SLR camera in 2006 and using books and the internet taught himself basic photography skills. He began to develop a passion for travelling to undeveloped places, and hearing about the buffalo race, Chan made a special trip to Indonesia in search of his spectacular image. After an early start and hours of waiting, Chan’s patience paid off, and what he describes as an unforgettable trip culminated with his winning photograph.

Other announcements on the night included the professional category winners, covering Current Affairs to Commercial, Travel to Fine Art Portraiture. Among the winners are Javier Arcenillas from Spain who, after being shortlisted in four categories, triumphed in the Current Affairs and Contemporary Issues categories, and the UK’s Adam Hinton, winner of the Commercial Campaign category, who began his photographic career at the age of 12 when his father bought him an SLR camera.

Astrid Merget, Creative Director, said: “Alejandro’s spectacular winning images are testimony to the incredibly high standard we have seen this year. We have been extremely impressed with the quality of entries across all categories, notably the standard of entries for the Open competition. The Student Focus Award also continues to flourish year on year and it is very exciting to be working with the next generation of photographer.”

Tatsuya Akashi, Vice President of Digital Imaging at Sony Europe, said: “This year's entrants have once again amazed and enthralled us with the sheer diversity and high caliber of entries submitted from across the globe. We would like to congratulate all the winners on their fantastic achievements."

The Winners’ Showcase is the flagship exhibition and one of several photography exhibitions running as part of the World Photography Festival at Somerset House, London, 26 April – 22 May. Featuring a vast collection of international contemporary photography, spanning genres including documentary, sport, portraiture, landscape, fashion and much more, the Showcase captures a unique view of the world in 2010/11 as recorded through the lens of winning photographers who entered this year’s competition.

Outstanding Contribution

A further highlight of tonight’s gala ceremony was ground-breaking photographer Bruce Davidson receiving the Outstanding Contribution to Photography Award. Davidson, 77, has a career spanning more than half a century, and is one of America’s most distinguished photographers. An exhibition of his work is being shown as part of the World Photography Festival at Somerset House. The exhibition, selected by Bruce Davidson with Simon Baker, curator of photography and international art, Tate, will include some of his most famous works from the East 100th Street and Circus collections.

media_1303940315190.png

Student Focus

Tonight’s Leicester Square event also saw student photographer Louis Boulet from École Nationale Supérieure Louis Lumiere, France announced as the winner of the Student Focus award. Recognised as the world’s most high-profile student photography prize and open to universities worldwide, Louis fought off fierce competition from entries from over 200 institutions across six continents.

Created in partnership with the Young Tate Online, Tate’s digital programme for young creative’s, photographers from each of the shortlisted institutions were given one month to produce a series of images on the subject of ‘Actions speak louder than words’ with Sony Alpha cameras. Having been flown to London to receive his prize, Louis has been awarded approximately 45,000 Euros worth of Sony digital imaging equipment for his school.

Focus Award 2011/12

Each year WPO collaborates with an international charity for the special Focus Award, dedicated to using photography in order to raise awareness on a particular global issue. As part of the ceremony, WPO and Sony announced a partnership for the 2011/12 Focus Award with Save the Children.

Sony making just three stills camera models

media_1302972269968.png

According to an article at Japan based DC.Watch, Sony is making just the full-frame A900, the SLT A55V (pictured above) and NEX-5; none of the plethora of other models we've seen lately are in production. If you're thinking of buying anything else I would pick it up sooner rather than later, before stock disappears. We don't believe this has anything to do with the tragedy in Northern Japan, more likely the company is dedicating manufacturing capacity to new models.

Sony announce HVL-F43AM Flashgun

media_1302675294906.png

Sony has announced today the HVL-F43AM shoe-mounted, bounce and swivel (Quick Shift) flashgun for A- and E-mount cameras. It has a guide number of GN43 (105mm ISO100 m) and is said to be dust- and moisture-resistant. There's no word yet on price but it will be available soon (Spring 2011).

Sony has also announced the VCT-55LH multi-purpose bracket, as well as a new VCT-55LH case (not pictured) and hood for DT 35mm F1.8 SAM and 85mm F2.8 SAM lenses (not pictured).

Press release:

HVL-F43AM external flash
With a powerful output of GN43 (105mm ISO100 m), the compact yet versatile HVL-F43AM flash from Sony is optimised for superb results with all A-mount cameras.
As featured on the HVL-F58AM, the innovative Quick Shift Bounce system allows flash head position to be adjusted instantly when switching between horizontal and vertical compositions. This maintains consistent shadow positions regardless of camera orientation, allowing easy creation of natural-looking ‘bounce’ effects.
Smart flash functions open up even broader creative lightning possibilities.

Wireless Ratio Control makes it easy to select light emission ratios for up to three separate flash units*. This allows quick creation of sophisticated multi-point lighting effects without the need for complex professional equipment. Ideal for everyday shooting and more serious applications, its dust- and moisture-resistant design makes the HVL-F43AM ideal for demanding assignments, indoors or outside.

Flash power levels are switchable in 22 increments, from 1/1 through to 1/128 level in 1/3 steps. High output power is complemented by a quick 2.9 second (approx.) recycling time. Despite the flash’s extensive functions, operation is refreshingly clear and simple via the high-quality LCD screen and direction buttons.

VCT-55LH bracket
The VCT-55LH is a versatile mounting bracket that offers space for mounting additional ISO cold shoe accessories. A useful add-on for all A-mount cameras by Sony, the bracket can also be used with E-mount cameras such as the NEX-5, NEX-3 and the Handycam® NEX-VG10E HD camcorder.
Other accessories – like a shotgun microphone – can be securely mounted while the camera’s main shoe is occupied. The VCT-55LH is ideal for use with the CLM-V55 clip-on LCD monitor that offers a clear, high-resolution view of images during video and still shooting.

Soft Carrying Case LCS-AMB
The LCS-AMB carry case protects your A-mount camera and attached standard zoom lens while you’re travelling. A special suspended partition cradles the camera securely while allowing quick access. Finished in durable black polyester material, the case can be slung over a shoulder using the supplied strap, carried by the grab handle or attached to a belt. It also features handy pockets with space for up to two extra batteries, spare memory card and lens cap. (NB: Not compatible with DSLR-A900/A850).

Lens Hood ALC-SH111
Compatible with DT 35mm F1.8 SAM and 85mm F2.8 SAM lenses, this round-profile hood shades from direct sunlight to prevent glare and lens flare.
See all accessories by Sony for the α camera system here.

The new HVL-F43AM external flash, VCT-55LH bracket, LCS-AMB soft carrying case and ALC-SH111 lens hood for α cameras by Sony are available from Spring 2011.

Sony add clip-on monitor CLM-V55 for HDDSLRs

media_1294905058606.png

Sony has announced a 5-inch 800x480pixel LCD for their video-enabled DSLRs. The images provided don't show the power options. There's a AC adaptor and a battery-pack, which presumably attaches to the rear, hence the lack of photos - it's unlikely to be a neat solution. Although it will be available in March, the price has not yet been confirmed.

Sony announces firmware upgrade for A850 and A900 DSLRs

media_1291275515015.png
Sony has announced a free firmware upgrade for the full-frame A900 and A850, improving AF responsiveness, increasing the EV shift range from ±3EV to ±5EV (for improved HDR photos) and enabling the shutter release without a lens attached for astrophotography. The upgrade will be available shortly.
Press release

SONY ANNOUNCES FIRMWARE UPGRADE FOR DSLR-A900/A850

Creative shooting enhancements for full-frame α cameras

A firmware upgrade that refines shooting responses and creative options for the α900 and α850 35mm full-frame DSLR cameras from Sony.

All new and existing customers are advised to install the upgrade, available to download from the ‘Support’ area of the Sony web site.

Autofocus is quicker and more responsive than ever, thanks to improved AF motor control and smarter distance detection of out-of-focus objects.

Creative options are extended by a broadened range of exposure value (EV) compensation settings, now increased from ±3EV to ±5EV. Selected compensation value is displayed in the navigation display on the main LCD screen of both cameras. This boosted EV compensation range gives extra headroom when composing extremely high- or low-key images.
Exposure bracketing range has also been increased from a maximum of 4.0EV (three shots at -2EV, 0EV, +2EV) to a maximum of 6.0EV (-3EV, 0EV, +3EV). This wider range gives added flexibility when capturing multiple frames at different exposure values – for example when acquiring images for the creation of powerful post-shooting HDR effects.

As a further refinement, a new menu option allows shutter release to be enabled, even when the camera body doesn’t detect an attached lens. It’s useful for specialist applications such as astrophotography when the camera is attached to a telescope.

The latest firmware upgrade by Sony for registered α900 and α850 DSLR customers is available free of charge from here.

Sony roll out NXCAM

media_1290016713448.png
Sony has unveiled a new pro-level camcorder that's under development and compatible with the maker's recently introduced E-mount lenses. The new and as yet unnamed NXCAM features a Super-35mm equivalent format CMOS sensor. But before you start ditching your EOS 5D MK II's, this is not the same as a full-frame 35mm chip, it's only half that of 35mm and only slightly larger than the APS-C size sensors in the NEX cameras.

Press release:
NXCAM” HD camcorder under development, featuring E-mount lens system

Sony to expand 35mm large format sensor camcorder lineup
Sony Corporation announced today that it is developing a new type of E-mount interchangeable lens camcorder for professional use that is equipped with a Super-35mm equivalent large format CMOS sensor. This new addition to Sony’s professional “NXCAM” line will be available in the middle of 2011.
media_1290016773172.png
Already a key player in the 35mm digital cinematography business with the highly acclaimed “CineAlta” F35 and SRW-9000PL for high-end digital cinema production, Sony has just strengthened its lineup in this category with the recent PMW-F3 announcement. In addition to this, with this new “NXCAM” HD camcorder now (still under development), Sony looks to further strengthen its position in the entry-level segment by providing an affordable yet highly capable professional solution for many applications including independent film, music video and corporate communications all looking for the cinematic look.
This “NXCAM” HD camcorder under development will be equipped with a Super-35mm equivalent sensor, a widely used film stock size in the film industry that is perfectly designed for capturing motion picture. This new sensor will have extraordinary performance in terms of picture quality and sensitivity, and is able to create rich “Bokeh” effect (beautifully defocused image) that is perfect for artistic story-telling in motion picture.
Thanks to the adoption of the E-mount interchangeable lens system that is identical to the “α” series NEX-5, 3 and “Handycam” NEX-VG10, the E-mount lenses will be compatible with this new professional camcorder. In addition, a very short flange back distance (the distance between lens mount surface and sensor surface) let various “α” A-mount lenses be mounted via a mount adaptor (LA-EA1). Furthermore, it is also possible to attach many other lenses using third-party mount adaptors*1. With such flexibility, users will be able to experiment with various creative expressions by exploiting the characteristics of different optics.
* 1: Not all types of adaptors and lenses are guaranteed.
The recording format for this new HD camcorder will be AVCHD, a widely supported format by many non liner editing software vendors and the same format as HXR-NX5 “NXCAM” camcorder.
There is also a plan to implement 1080p (60p / 30p / 24p*2 or 50p / 25p) recording modes.
(MPEG4-AVC/H.264 compression will be used for these modes.)
*2: 59.94p / 29.97p / 23.98p respectively.

Sony NEX-5 and NEX-3 Get Firmware Update

Sony’s NEX-5 and -3 cameras got firmware updates with usability upgrades, Manual Focus Assist, and autofocus support for A-mount lenses. Available for free on the Sony Support website. The NEX-5 and NEX-3 cameras previously received a firmware update that brought it 3D sweep panorama capabilities.
media_1287052574789.png
Available now for download with versions available for Windows and Mac OS, the free upgrade adds several performance enhancements. Autofocus is now supported when using the NEX-5 and NEX-3 with 14 lenses from the full range of A-mount optics by Sony and Carl Zeiss that includes telephotos, primes and zooms. Aperture settings can be maintained during HD movie recording, and system menu operation has been streamlined alongside other improvements. Registered NEX-5/NEX-3 owners will be advised of the free update via email, although if you can't wait European customers can download the firmware upgrade for the NEX-3 from here, or here for the NEX-5.

Fujitsu entrusted with Sony CMOS fabrication

media_1286007607305.png

Sony is to delegate production of CMOS sensors used in digital cameras to chip-maker Fujitsu Semiconductor Ltd. According to The Japan Times, Fujitsu doesn't compete directly with Sony in sensor manufacturing, but didn't want to divest its proprietary technology with rivals (Sanyo, Sharp and Toshiba amongst others). Final assembly will remain firmly behind closed doors at Sony's own fabrication facilities.

The debate about who makes Nikon's sensors continues to be a point of discussion on various forums around the web. Although Nikon designs sensors for use in their DSLRs, such as the hybrid LBCAST sensor used in the D2H of 2003 (which was made by Sony), production is outsourced. However, while the D3x sensor is also made by Sony, a fact confirmed to me and other journalists by a senior Nikon executive at the time of the launch, there remains some controversy over who makes the 12-megapixel sensor in the D3, D700, and D3s. It's still most likely to be Sony, in my opinion, but built to Nikon's own designs.

With Fujitsu producing certain components of of Sony's CMOS sensors, purportedly for reduced production costs, I wonder if it might also have a second purpose, to allow customization of the final finishing for ad-hoc designs from Sony's clients; rival camera makers, not only Nikon, but Pentax too. You have to remember that the Sony camera manufacturing business is separate from its semiconductor business (there are no duplicated manufacturing operations), and that Sony will be buying sensors from its own semiconductor business, much in the same way that Nikon and Pentax do.
