Panasonic unwrap Lumix GF3

media_1307953417412.png

After the launch recently of the G3 comes the expected announcement of the GF3, the smallest of the Lumix G-series models to date. These cameras are popular not only for their stills, but for video too. The Lumix models record up to 29 minutes, which is much more compelling than the Olympus Pens' somewhat restricted video (7 minutes on the E-PL2 in HD - 720p). But, note the Full HD 1080i (interlaced) claim of this new model, that's not the same as 1080p, which is preferred. We hope to have more information on that after we've received a standard-production sample for review.

UPDATE: Also note the lack of a hotshoe, though there's a built-in flash, that means no optional EVF. This is much more like a digital compact (albeit with interchangeable lenses) than any previous mirrorless offering.

Panasonic roll out Leica 25mm (50mm) f/1.4

media_1307956457501.png

Panasonic has announced a Leica-branded 25mm f/1.4 (50mm equivalent). The lens is Leica designed, but made by Panasonic at the Yamagata lens plant - the factory was said to have been damaged by the recent earthquake in Northern Japan.

Interesting use of Nikon-esqe 'nano' element coating to reduce flare and ghosting. There's no IS as some detractors are bound to point out, but there's absolutely no need for it in a lens like this.

The optical construction consists of nine elements in seven groups, that's unusual as most even high end 50mm's adopt seven or sometimes eight elements in total. Cheaper models, the modern 50mm f/1.8 type, for instance, use six elements. Of those nine, two are aspherical (glass moulded, not ground) and one is made from ultra high refractive (UHR) index glass.

There's no word as yet on price or availability.

UPDATE. A spokesperson for Panasonic has confirmed to the DJP the lens will be available in August at approximately £539.99 (inc VAT), or just $599.95 in the US.

Press release:

Panasonic expands LUMIX G Micro System range with light, high performance Leica DG lens

The LUMIX G Leica DG Summilux 25mm / F1.4 ASPH lens delivers superb optical performance for use everywhere you go

Panasonic today launched the LUMIX G Leica DG Summilux 25mm / F1.4 ASPH Lens, a new light-weight interchangeable lens based on the Micro Four Thirds Standard.  Meeting Leica’s strict standards ensuring high optical quality, the new lens will allow you to take stunning photos and videos wherever you are, even when shooting in low-light conditions.

This versatile, compact lens delivers bright, sharp images suitable for a wide range of photographic requirements. From daily snapshots while out and about; to indoor portraits without flash in low light levels; to creative images which take advantage of its beautiful peripheral defocus effect, the Leica DG lens turns everyday moments into works of art.

With this Leica DG mounted, the LUMIX G Micro System is easy to carry with you anywhere. An Ultra High Refractive (UHR) index lens makes it thin and light without compromising image quality. While a newly developed “nano surface coating” on the surface of the lens, means ghosting and flare will be dramatically reduced in your photos, further emphasising the high image quality from Panasonic’s LUMIX G Micro System.

The F1.4 aperture lets you capture the desired parts of an image in sharp focus, while giving other parts a soft focus. This makes the subject really stand out, adding a rich expressiveness to the photo. The lens also incorporates an inner focus direct-drive linear motor, which enables smooth, silent operation of its fast and accurate contrast Auto Focus (AF) system for use in both photo and movie recording.

Despite its extremely compact size and superb optical performance, this lens brings out the full capabilities of the 4/3-type image sensor; achieves smoother Live View performance in combination with the camera’s body; and allows a variety of unique features such as the contrast AF function of LUMIX G Micro System cameras.

With the addition of this new 25mm lens, Panasonic now offers twelve lenses ranging from 7mm to 300mm, making sure you have the right set-up for the right job. With the LUMIX G Micro System, there really is no limit to your creativity.

Exceptional image quality
The LUMIX G3 has raised the bar in interchangeable lens camera image quality. With an optimal balance of the imaging engine and sensor size, the LUMIX G3 produces exceptional image quality to take your photography to the next level:
·        Large sensor, low noise: A 16.0-megapixel Live MOS Micro Four Thirds Sensor means images will be cleaner and freer of noise than ever. With newly developed processing capabilities, the low-noise pixel area and the low-noise circuit are combined, resulting in a noise level of less than one third of a conventional sensor

Panasonic reveals Lumix G market share

media_1296148546705.png
Panasonic UK has issued a press release in which it claims the DMC-G2 is its best selling model and, continuing in a revealing statement, that they now hold an 11.3 per-cent market share of all interchangeable lens cameras, what they call CSCs (Compact System Cameras or mirrorless cameras to the rest of us) and DSLRs. They also claim that mirrorless sales are up 194 per-cent over the previous year (but if you look closely they're comparing Dec '10 to Dec '09) - mirrorless cameras were few and far between in Dec '09. All the same, on the eve of the first deliveries of the GF2 (pictured above) it's encouraging news all round.

Lens Compact System Camera - DMC-GF2*

Featuring Ultimate Ease of Operation and High picture Quality
In Both Photo and Full HD Movie Recording
*For an interchangeable lens system camera with a built-in flash as of November 4, 2010.

Panasonic is pleased to announce the newest interchangeable lens compact system camera from the LUMIX G Micro System, DMC-GF2. Based on the Micro Four Thirds standard and with a dramatic downsizing from its predecessor, the DMC-GF2 features an outstanding compactness and ease of operation while pursuing high image quality.

The world’s smallest and lightest DMC-GF2 is reduced approx. 19% in size and approx. 7% in weight compared with the DMC-GF1*. The new model is equipped with a built-in flash which adopts new pop-up mechanism to prevent vignetting effect due to short distance between the flash unit to the interchangeable lens. Featuring 12.1-megapixel high speed Live MOS sensor and high performance Venus Engine FHD, the DMC-GF2 boasts high picture quality not only in photo but also in movie, which has been upgraded in resolution to full HD 1920 x 1080 at 60i (NTSC) / 50i (PAL) in AVCHD**.

The operation is extremely easy to understand for any level of users with the adoption of touch control and the new Graphic User Interface (GUI) designed especially for DMC-GF2. The focus is immediately set to the subject by just touching it on the large, 460,000-dot LCD and you can even release the shutter.

The Touch Q-menu can be customized by the user and include only the features that they most often use. Together with the simple button components including the dedicated buttons for movie recording and iA (Intelligent Auto) mode that lights during activation, users can operate the camera intuitively with ease and comfort.

*For an interchangeable lens system camera with a built-in flash as of November 4, 2010.
**Full-HD (1920 x 1080) movies are output by the image sensor at 30p (NTSC) / 25p (PAL), and recorded at 60i (NTSC) / 50i (PAL). HD (1280 x 720) movies are output by the image sensor at 30p (NTSC) / 25p (PAL), and recorded at 60p (NTSC) / 50p (PAL).

Key Features Explained:

1. Intuitive touch-control shooting in a world’s smallest and lightest body*
The DMC-GF2 is dramatically reduced by approx. 19% in size and approx. 7% in weight compared with the predecessor DMC-GF1 to make the body world’s smallest and lightest*. These size reductions are made possible by various innovative approaches including the downsizing of mount unit and a reduced number of internal parts by integrating electrical circuits. The new GF2 is equipped with a built-in flash which adopts new pop-up mechanism to prevent vignetting effect due to short distance between the flash unit to the interchangeable lens.

The operation is extremely easy to understand for any level of users with the touch control and the new GUI (Graphic User Interface) designed especially for the DMC-GF2. The focus is immediately set to the subject by just touching it on the large, 460,000-dot LCD and you can even release the shutter. Once you lock on the subject by a touch, the camera tracks the subject with the AF tracking function even if it moves. Just a touch on the screen lets you select the part and the size of AF area with the 1-area AF. The 1-area AF in Face Detection even allows you to set finer focus on the eyes while capturing human face bright and clear. The Multi-area AF with 23 AF areas allows setting a group of AF point according to the composition. With the Intelligent Scene Selector in the iA mode, the camera automatically switches to the appropriate mode according to the subject touched. For example, a touch on a human face switches to the portrait mode and a touch on the background or scenery to the scenery mode while a touch on the subject close to the camera to the close-up mode. With the MF assist mode in the manual focusing, you can enlarge the part by just a touch to select 1x, 5x or 10x and smoothly move the part by dragging it on the screen. Using the defocus control function in iA mode and the My Colour Peripheral Defocus mode, the range of defocus can be adjusted by just moving the slider by a finger.

The touch operation dramatically shortcuts the action of setting in the menu, too. The Touch Q-menu can be customized by the user and include only the features that they most often use. Together with the simple button components, including the dedicated buttons for movie recording and iA mode, which lights in use, users can operate the camera intuitively with ease. Further benefits of the touch-screen operations include playing back images with outstanding visibility. You can play back the image you want out of hundreds of stocks by touching them in the thumbnails. To play back images one by one in order, you can drag the image over the screen with a finger to browse the collection of photos as you flip over the pages of a book. Max. 16x of enlargement is also operated easily with touches.

*For an interchangeable lens system camera with a built-in flash as of November 4, 2010.

2. High image quality as an interchangeable lens Compact System Camera
While achieving breakthroughs in compactness of design and outstandingly high usability, the DMC-GF2assures high picture quality in both photo and movie thanks to the best-balanced performance of an imaging engine and a sensor.
For the image processor, the Venus Engine FHD incorporated features exceptionally high performance signal processing capabilities in both photo and movie recording. With the advanced noise reduction system employing the 3D NR and CNR (Chromatic Noise Reduction), you can capture clear, naturally-balanced images even when shooting at high ISO sensitivity levels preventing the colour bleeding due to the chromatic aberration and deterioration of the resolution. The Intelligent Resolution technology is another feature of the Venus Engine FHD. With the Intelligent Resolution technology, 3 areas - outlines, detailed texture areas and soft gradation areas are automatically detected. The outline parts are enhanced effectively to give edges more clearness while giving a moderate accentuation to the texture areas to look more finely detailed. To the soft gradation part, superior noise reduction system of the Venus Engine FHD is applied to make it smoother. Apart from the uniform enhancement of sharpness, the Intelligent Resolution precisely performs signal processing pixel by pixel in the most effective way. As a result, images are naturally clear and crisp in both photo and movie recording.
The 4/3-type 12.1-megapixel Live MOS sensor featured in the DMC-GF2 offers the best of both worlds -- the superior image quality of a CCD sensor and the lower power consumption of a CMOS sensor. Advanced technology that makes it possible to read 4 channels of data simultaneously also helps the DMC-GF2 deliver 60 frames-per-second full-time Live View images, while faithfully reproducing high-resolution images with fine detail and rich gradation. Linking smoothly with the Live MOS sensor, the Venus Engine FHD records stunning high-resolution 12.1-megapixel images with exceptional accuracy. Signals containing a large amount of image data are sent from the Live MOS sensor to the optional Live View Finder at 60 fps, resulting in clear, smooth live view. The Venus Engine FHD also supports an extensive range of functions, including HDMI output.
The contrast AF system adopted by the LUMIX DMC-GF2 is not only accurate and easy to use, but also very fast. Users can choose from a wide range of AF modes, including multiple-area AF with up to 23 focus areas, 1-area AF with a selectable focus area, Face Detection, and AF Tracking.
The Dust Reduction System in the GF2 helps eliminate the possibility of dust or other foreign matter getting inside the camera when you're changing lenses by placing a supersonic wave filter in front of the Live MOS sensor. Vibrating vertically around 50,000 times per second, the filter repels dust and other particles effectively.

3. High quality image recording in 1920x1080 AVCHD full HD movie
The LUMIX DMC-GF2 is an advanced photographic tool for recording not only great photos but also beautiful full-HD movies. The new GF2 can record high-resolution full-HD 1920 x 1080 movies at 60i (NTSC) / 50i (PAL), or smooth HD 1280 x 720 movies at 60p (NTSC) / 50p (PAL) in AVCHD (MPEG-4/H.264)* format**. The HD Motion JPEG in 1280 x 720 can also be selected as an alternative movie recording format in addition to QVGA, VGA and WVGA, which is more compatible with PCs. A special, separate button on the back lets the user instantly start recording movies while shooting photos without any having to make any extra settings. High quality sound can be recorded with the stereo microphone for Dolby® Digital Stereo Creator. A Wind Cut function is also available to block out most of the noise from background wind.
Even video beginners can record excellent movies with the DMC-GF2 because the popular iA mode is also available in movie recording. Optical Image Stabilizer (O.I.S.) helps prevent handshake when using high-powered zoom. Face Detection automatically detects a face in the frame and adjusts focus, exposure, contrast, and skin complexion on it, so it always turns out beautifully. The Intelligent D-range Control offers natural looking by optimizing the exposure for each part of an image, preventing blocked shadows and blown highlights and helping ensure that gradation and details are reproduced beautifully including the blue colour of the sky. Plus Intelligent Scene Selector automatically switches between Portrait, Scenery, Close-up and Low Light modes according to the situation to optimize various parameters for higher visual quality.
The Touch AF in movie recording also lets users enjoy professional-like rack focusing. Just by pointing the subject, the focus is shifted to it and let it stand out to attract attention. The DMC-GF2 can save a frame of movie as photo during playback. The Video Divide function lets you split a video into two at the point you desire, this makes it possible to delete the unwanted part by cutting it off.

Panasonic unveil 3D Lens for Lumix G Micro cameras

media_1280337373660.png

Panasonic to Launch World’s First* Interchangeable 3D Lens for LUMIX G Micro System**

Panasonic is pleased to announce the development of the world's first* twin digital interchangeable lens. The revolutionary new accessory will make high quality 3D shooting possible with an interchangeable lens system camera for the very first time. As 3D content becomes increasingly popular across a variety of platforms, Panasonic plans to release this new lens for sale before the end of the year to deliver the joy and excitement of 3D shooting to interchangeable lens system camera users.

Having already taken the lead in 3D technology, Panasonic has had great success with the launch of their 3D-capable VIERA televisions and 3D Blu-rayTM Disc Players. The 3D market is predicted to steadily grow over the coming years, as explained by industry analysts, Screen Digest: “As consumers slowly replace the main TV set in their house, and as the price of 3D TVs continue to fall, Screen Digest expects that 3D TVs will be in around a quarter of households in major developed markets by the end of 2014***. “

The introduction of the 3D lens aims to respond to demands of consumers who want to enjoy 3D shooting for themselves whilst also expanding Panasonic’s range of 3D products. The lens will allow users to capture images in 3D which can then be viewed back using 3D-capable VIERA televisions in the comfort of their own home.
“As consumers slowly replace the main TV set in their house, and as the price of 3D TVs continue to fall, Screen Digest expects that 3D TVs will be in around a quarter of households in major developed markets by the end of 2014. “

Until now, 3D shooting with an interchangeable lens system camera has only been possible by using panorama systems or a combination of two lenses and two CCDs, but these systems have drawbacks including the need for a dedicated 3D camera and the difficulties of capturing moving objects. Panasonic's new 3D lens for the LUMIX G Micro System features two optical systems installed within the diameter of the lens mount, creating stereo images from the left and right lenses, to be processed with a 3D image processing system. Thanks to Panasonic's advancements in optical technology, image processing system, and lens barrel design, the 3D lens still manages to retain an extremely compact size.

This new compact 3D-capable interchangeable lens allows easier handling and instant 3D shooting, producing 3D images without distortion or time lag between left and right images, even for moving objects.

Through expanding its range of 3D products, Panasonic will continue to lead the industry by bringing a true-to-life 3D experience to its customers.

Press release:

media_1279700857883.png

DMC-LX5: Capturing Creativity with the New Panasonic DMC-LX5 Compact Digital Camera,
With New High Sensitivity CCD and F2.0 LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON LENS

Panasonic is pleased to announce the long-awaited DMC-LX5 - a successor to the DMC-LX3, acclaimed worldwide by photography enthusiasts. The premium compact camera is fully re-designed in the lens from its predecessor with changes in the CCD and the image processing engine, and with further improvements and upgrades to the camera, ensuring the new LX5 produces high picture quality and creative images.

The DMC-LX5 packages an f/2.0 LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON lens with 24mm wide-angle and 3.8x optical zoom. This low-distortion, high-resolution lens lets you capture truly dynamic 24mm wide-angle images while rendering the tiniest nuances clearly, from corner to corner. The fully open f/2.0-3.3 aperture and iris diaphragm also work together to produce stunning scenes with gentle soft focusing. The 24mm wide-angle lens captures approx. 213% larger viewing space compared to a normal 35mm lens.
The DMC-LX5 features a large 1/1.63-inch, 10.1-megapixel ultra-sensitive CCD. It achieves high resolution, noise-less pictures even in high sensitivity recording and richly reproduced gradation in highly contrasted situations with the exquisitely wide dynamic range. In addition, the CCD in DMC-LX5 can reproduce images shot with the lens set from 24mm to 90mm in any of three aspect ratios; 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9, so you can always capture dynamic, richly expressive shots with a wide perspective.
With the Intelligent Resolution technology, 3 areas – outlines, detailed texture areas and soft gradation areas – are automatically detected. Apart from the uniform enhancement of sharpness, this technology precisely performs signal processing pixel by pixel in the most effective way according to the area. As a result, images are clear and crisp in both photos and movies. The Intelligent Zoom extends the zoom ratio by approx. 1.3x maintaining the image quality even combining a digital zoom. A 3.8x optical can virtually extend to 5x equivalent.
The DMC-LX5 can record HD movie in AVCHD Lite with high sound quality of Dolby Digital Creator. Motion JPEG format is also available (1,280 x 720 pixels). Just press the Motion Picture Button, and shooting begins. In the Creative Movie Mode, the shutter speed and aperture can be adjusted. The iA Mode can also be activated in motion picture recording. When the DMC-LX5 is connected to a Panasonic VIERA via an optional mini HDMI cable, the TV's remote control unit can be used to enjoy playing back with greater convenience.
The excellent manual controllability is the advantage of DMC-LX5. The jog dial enhances the operability together with the focus switch relocated on the lens barrel. Panasonic LX3 compact in stock

With all the talk recently of the micro Four Thirds (mFT) Lumix GF1, the excellent Lumix LX3 high-end compact has been largely overlooked. As a result, maybe, those folks at Amazon (US) are now showing it as in stock. Better be quick, though.

Panasonic announce Leica 45mm (90mm-e) f/2.8 macro

Panasonic has also announced today the Leica 45mm (90mm-e) f/2.8 macro. Remember, Panasonic make these in Japan under under license from Leica, but it's not inconceivable that we will see something from them, an mFT camera perhaps (though they have denied the intention to produce one). All will be revealed on the 09/09/09, though I have to say it's most likely a re-branded version of the GF1.

A New Micro Four Thirds Digital Interchangeable Lens
LEICA DG MACRO-ELMARIT 45mm / F2.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S.
with Outstanding Image Quality and High Mobility

Panasonic today unveiled a new macro lens from world renowned imaging brand Leica. The LEICA DG MACRO-ELMARIT 45mm / F2.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. (35mm camera equivalent: 90mm) is the latest edition to the LUMIX G Micro System.

Eagerly anticipated by photographer enthusiasts worldwide, the new LEICA DG MACRO-ELMARIT 45mm / F2.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. boasts a superb image quality with minimum distortion, chromatic aberrations as well as ghosts and flares that passes a stringent Leica standard to go beyond expectations.

The new lens system uses both an aspherical lens and an ED lens in its fourteen lenses in ten groups to achieve outstanding compactness, taking advantage of the Micro Four Thirds standard to achieve dramatic downsizing while minimizing distortion and chromatic aberration. Panasonic's Mega O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) suppresses the blurring that is commonly caused by hand-shake, making it easy to shoot sharply focused macro shots and produce detailed images in dimly lit places without using a tripod.

It incorporates an inner focus system of three groups of floating structure which enables excellent resolution and contrast without changing its overall length from full life-size magnification to infinity. The inclusion of a stepping motor makes the focusing action smooth and silent for use in both photo and movie recording. The closest focusing distance can be instantly changed to 15cm or 50 cm(0.5 ft to 1.64 ft) with the switch on the lens barrel according to the shooting opportunity. The LEICA DG MACRO-ELMARIT 45mm / F2.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. lens also excels in portraits, middle-range snapshot, or landscapes in addition to the original full life-size macro shots.

When mounted on the LUMIX G Micro System Camera, the new lens allows use of the advanced contrast AF system, which includes a Face Recognition function, for more convenient, more enjoyable shooting. Seven blades give the aperture a rounded shape that produces an attractive smooth effect in out-of-focus areas when shooting at larger aperture settings. The new LEICA DG MACRO-ELMARIT 45mm / F2.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. lens also features a highly reliable metal mount, and uses multi-coated lens elements that minimize ghosts and flare to further enhance its optical performance.
