Wacom’s Intuos4 redefines the pen tablet for digital content creators

Press release:

Next generation pen tablet delivers new proprietary pen technology and a stylish, ergonomic design loaded with new features

Wacom today unveils Intuos4, a professional pen tablet system that delivers new features and unparalleled performance to photographers, designers and artists. Inspired by members of Wacom’s professional community, the next generation Intuos is anchored by its new pen performance, capable of capturing the slightest nuance of pen pressure against the tablet surface, as well as offering 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity. Intuos4’s intelligent industrial design provides advancements in looks, comfort and control. Additionally, specific workflow and productivity tools include customisable shortcut and modifier keys with accompanying OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) displays, which show the current function setting of each key.

All new pen performance

The Intuos4 Grip Pen features Wacom’s new proprietary tip sensor technology, offering users near-zero (one gramme) starting pressure for an even more natural feel. Now, any writing, art or design can start with an incredibly light touch, emulating the same feel, response and result derived from working with traditional media.

Additionally, the Intuos4 pen delivers 2048 levels of pressure, doubling the resolution of the pen’s pressure curve to further enhance feedback and expand the creative effects within software applications that support pressure sensitivity. The Intuos4 Grip Pen features a pressure-sensitive eraser and two customisable side-switches for setting commands such as double-click and right-click on the pen. For those looking for a pen with a thicker barrel, a thick bodied Intuos4 replacement grip comes as an accessory.
Updated design improves workflow and boosts productivity
With its ergonomic design, the ultra-slim Intuos4 pen tablet is the ideal creative instrument for working with digital content. Its new reversible (ambidextrous) design puts all of the shortcut and modifier keys in the ideal position for right-handed or left-handed users. The ExpressKeys are conveniently located on one side of the tablet, making them all available to the users’ non-dominant hand. To move from right-handed to left-handed use, simply rotate the tablet through 180 degrees and change the orientation of the illuminated icons within the Wacom tablet driver software.

These application-specific ExpressKeys are instrumental in helping improve workflow and boost productivity by placing commonly used commands right at the fingertips. The close proximity of these tools to the actual work area is efficient and comfortable, helping to save valuable time by minimising dependence on the keyboard. New to Intuos4 are illuminated OLED displays (not featured on the Intuos4 S) that provide a helpful reminder of the current function setting of each ExpressKey. As these settings can be application-specific, the displays will update immediately as the user changes between applications.

Also new to the Intuos4 is the introduction of a user-defined Touch Ring capable of controlling up to four different functions in any application. A button located in the centre of the ring ‘toggles’ between functions such as zoom, scroll, brush size adjustment, canvas rotation and layer selection. The position of an LED located along the perimeter of the Touch Ring indicates the current function.

Pick and mix software

Intuos4 owners can choose valuable software applications based on individual needs. A selection from industry leaders such as Adobe, Autodesk and Corel are available to users following installation of an Intuos4 pen tablet. In addition, Intuos4 users will appreciate the significant upgrades to Wacom’s powerful, user-friendly driver software, including the introduction of precision mode and radial menus. In precision mode the mapping of the pen tip changes to a slow motion movement, enabling even more precise and accurate work. This feature is activated when the relevant ExpressKey is held down. Releasing it returns to normal mapping. Radial menus enable users to quickly access preferred functions through a hierarchical menu display. Functions can be customised and grouped together.

Intuos4 accessories

A new weighted pen stand not only provides a convenient pen holder, but also functions as a handy twist-off storage compartment for alternate pen nibs and handy nib extractor. Standard, felt, stroke and flex nibs ship with the Intuos4, allowing users to simulate working with a variety of traditional art and design materials.

Also available is an Art Pen, which turns on the rotation feature in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Corel Painter X to deliver natural brush effects, much like a calligraphy pen, as well as an Airbrush that enables users to create and define paint patterns within certain creative programmes. Finally, there is also the Classic Pen and a cordless and battery-free Wacom mouse.

“The Intuos4 is an intelligent pen tablet that addresses the needs of the creative professional with exciting new pen performance and thoughtful detailing,” says Guido Möller, product manager, professional products, at Wacom Europe. “By listening to our professional community, we are able to deliver an advanced pen tablet packed with new technologies and features that positively impacts creative control and productivity.”

Canon brings 15.1 MP and Full HD video to photography enthusiasts: the EOS 500D

Press Release:

United Kingdom / Republic of Ireland, 25 March 2009:
Canon announces the new 15.1MP EOS 500D which offers photographers an outstanding combination of features. Following the launch of the first Canon EOS camera to shoot movies – the EOS 5D Mark II in September 2008 – Canon now brings Full High Definition (HD) video capability to consumers in a compact and lightweight DSLR.

The new EOS 500D features a 15.1 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor – ideal for large detailed prints or enormous cropping possibilities. For shooting in near-dark conditions, the EOS 500D offers a high ISO sensitivity up to 3200 which is expandable to 12800, giving photographers the power to shoot in the dimmest light conditions. Outstanding noise reduction is made possible by Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor.

The EOS 500D heralds a new way for photography enthusiasts to capture their world. It pairs outstanding still image capture with Full HD 1080P video recording. For longer video shoots, users can also choose lower shooting resolutions of 720P or VGA. A built-in HDMI connection allows easy and instant review of images and movie clips on any compatible HDTV.

Every detail revealed
Exacting image preview and review is provided by a 3.0” Clear View LCD screen. The same screen as used on the acclaimed 5D Mark II, it features a 920,000 dot count – for ultra-detailed image review, accurate focus checks, and clear access to the EOS menu system. As well as aiding shooting from awkward angles, Live View mode includes contrast based and Face Detection AF options. Ideal for newcomers to digital SLR photography, these allow compact-camera style auto focus, with a real-time image displayed on the LCD.

Fast processing, fast focusing
Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor drives continuous shooting speeds of up to 3.4 fps in bursts of up to 170 JPEGs (Figure may vary depending on capacity of SD card used). Using Canon’s wide area AF system – which features 9 individual sensors, including a central cross type point with a high precision sensor for f/2.8 or faster lenses– makes capturing split-second action sequences possible.

DIGIC 4 works in conjunction with the CMOS sensor to deliver exceptional noise reduction and 14-bit image processing for smooth gradation of tones and natural-looking colours. In addition, DIGIC 4 enables the ultra-fast start-up times and near-instant image review after shooting that photographers demand.

Distinctive EOS quality
Despite its compact, lightweight body, the EOS 500D includes all the hallmarks of the EOS system. Every detail of the EOS 500D – from the large, bright viewfinder to the famously intuitive EOS menu system – is designed to provide users with a world-class shooting experience.

Image quality is protected by the EOS Integrated Cleaning System, which reduces, repels and removes unwanted dust from the sensor. Stubborn particles can be easily removed in post-production by using Dust Delete Data – which can be added to the image in-camera – and Canon’s included Digital Photo Professional software.

Digital Photo Professional software offers a comprehensive RAW editing package, with functions such as a quick check tool, a cropping tool, and a stamp tool – plus the ability to change brightness, White Balance and Picture Styles in RAW images. The software suite is included with EOS Utility and Picture Style editor for unrivalled versatility.

Compatibility with the full range of Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses and EX-series Speedlites – including the exceptionally compact, powerful new
Speedlite 270EX, which features a bounce and zoom head, plus fast recharging from just 2 AA sized batteries – allows the creation of a shooting system as unique as the photographer using it.

“The EOS 500D pushes the boundaries of what photographers can demand from their cameras, combining exceptional images with full HD video,” said Rainer Fuehres, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging, Europe. “Photography enthusiasts can now capture their most significant moments in a manner that matches their creativity.”

Any Canon photographer can register for the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY service, which allows access to the latest EOS information, useful updates and exclusive EOS content – plus tools that allow users to create their own video podcasts and store images online.

Manfrotto announces four new Baby Lightweight Stands

I would really like to see how these babies compare with the 001B's I have and use with my Speedlites (aka Speedlights) and Quantum strobes. Hopefully, I will review one (?) when they become available.

Press release:

Bogen Imaging is pleased to announce the launch of four new Baby Lightweight Stands, ideal for professional or enthusiast photographers whether on location or in the studio thanks to their light weight and compact size.

The new Baby Lightweight Stands are extendible to between 240cm and 385cm, with various payloads between 4kg and 10kg and all feature the new Quick Stack System (QSS) patented by Manfrotto.

With a combination of the most innovative technical solutions and a unique design, QSS enables you to attach each stand to the others, saving lots of room in the studio or when transporting the stands in a case for outdoor shooting – making them the perfect portable stands to add to your kit.

The new baby is sold individually or in a kit of three and can stand up on its own even when closed.

Practical and innovative, the new Baby Lightweight Stands include a new bi-injection casting that provides the photographer with a better ergonomic grip, while the new air cushioned system prevents any loads from unexpectedly falling down when the handles are unlocked, for safer product usage.

Available in four models: the 1051BAC and 1052BAC can hold loads of up to 4kg and 5kg respectively and have collars and spider casting made of Adapto, the technical polymer specifically developed by Manfrotto that’s 50% lighter than aluminium; the 1004BAC and 1005BAC (9kg and 10kg respectively) in aluminium.

They all feature a 3/8’’ screw top fixing with a 1/4’’ adapter, for any requirement.

The Manfrotto Baby Lightweight stands are available from April 2009 at the following RRPs:

Tamron debuts new SP 60mm f/2 macro

This new macro lens is an interesting departure for Tamron, as it appears to replace the 90mm f/2.8 a full-frame macro lens. While being the equivalent of a very useful 135mm f/2.8 in 35mm terms and possessing a focus limiter, the old 90mm f/2.8 had a short minimum focusing distance of 11.4 inches (29cm). You loose the compatibility with full-frame DSLRs, and while the minimum working distance is said to be the longest in its class (10cm from the front of the lens), by my rough calculation it’s still a over a inch less overall than the outgoing model. All the same, if you’re a Nikon D40/D40x/D60 user, the addition of a internal AF motor will be welcomed, as will the fast maximum aperture. There aren’t many macros with an f/2 aperture - the Olympus 50mm (100mm equivalent) and the Carl Zeiss 50mm f/2 Makro-Planar (and that’s the equivalent to a 75mm on a DSLR with an APS-C size sensor) but that has a reproduction ratio of 1:2, or half life size.

Kevin

Press release:

Tamron Develops SP AF60mm F/2.0 Di II MACRO 1:1

–Life-size macro lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras with APS-C size image sensors* that features a fast maximum aperture of F/2

Tamron Co., Ltd (Mr. Morio Ono, President), a comprehensive manufacturer of optical products with its head office in Saitama City, announced the development of the SP AF60mm F/2.0 Di II LD (IF) MACRO 1:1 (Model G005), a life-size macro lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras with APS-C size image sensors* that offers a fast maximum aperture of F/2.0.

The SP AF60mm F/2.0 Di II LD (IF) MACRO 1:1 (Model G005), covering an equivalent angle of view of 93mm when converted to the 35mm format* and boasting a maximum aperture of F/2.0—one stop faster than the F/2.8 maximum aperture found on conventional macro lenses in the same class—is a fast life-size macro lens that delivers dramatically attractive blurred background effects.

The new life-size macro lens from Tamron is expected to be made available in mounts for Canon, Nikon (with built-in AF motor) and Sony.

Price and launch dates will be announced at a later date.

Notes:

* Tamron’s conversion value is 1.55X.

* Di II lenses are designed exclusively for use with digital SLR cameras equipped with APS-C size image sensors and employ an optical system optimized for the characteristics of those digital cameras. Di II lenses are not designed for use with 35mm film cameras or digital SLR cameras with image sensors larger than 24 x 16mm.

* The special note “APS-C size equivalent” is hereinafter omitted.

DEVELOPMENT CONCEPT

Tamron’s macro lenses (SP AF90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO 1:1 (Model 272E), SP AF180mm F/3.5 Di MACRO 1:1 (Model B01) are world renowned for their outstanding optical performance. Particularly, the Tamron SP AF90mm macro lens first introduced in 1979 and subsequently upgraded and renewed seven times since has been highly evaluated by many photographers as a lens that delivers not only attractive out-of-focus effects and sharp descriptive performance in macro photography with its easy-to-use focal length, but also as a lens ideal for portraiture.

Amid the growing popularity of APS-C size DSLRs, Tamron recognizes that there are many photographers who wish to enjoy macro photography with a focal length that provides an angle of view equivalent to 90mm. Tamron therefore developed the SP AF60mm medium telephoto macro lens to meet the desire of those users and goes a step further by providing the extremely fast and desirable maximum aperture of F/2.0. The SP AF60mm is a high performance and versatile lens that is suitable not only for macro photography of textiles, small creatures, flora and more, but also for portraiture by making good use of its easy-to-use focal length, fast maximum aperture and high optical quality even in low-lit conditions.

OPTICAL FEATURES

1. Medium telephoto 1:1 life-size macro lens featuring a fast maximum aperture of F/2.0 that strikes a fine balance between attractive out-of-focus effects and sharpness

The SP AF60mm is a medium telephoto macro lens designed for APS-C size digital SLR cameras that realizes the fast maximum aperture of F/2.0 for the first time in the world1. Using an optical design approach that attaches methodical importance to optical quality, Tamron’s optical designers have successfully controlled complex movements of respective lens groups in order to restrain the increase in aberration changes due to the fast maximum aperture, thus achieving outstanding depictive performance that is uniformly sharp from the center to the periphery. Since the maximum aperture of F/2.0 provides a depth-of-field that is shallower than that of conventional F/2.8 lenses, the new lens enables the user to expand the range of the macro photographic expression. The SP AF60mm developed by combining Tamron’s accumulated macro lens design know-how is an attractive lens that maintains a well-balanced relationship between sharp image performance and beautiful out-of-focus background effects.

2. Employment of special low-dispersion glass elements

The lens employs two large LD (low dispersion) glass elements in its first group to thoroughly compensate for various aberrations and attain high optical quality.

3. Working distance of 100mm, the longest distance among lenses in this class2

Tamron has realized the long working distance of 100mm from the front element of the lens to the subject in 1:1 life-size macro photography. The long working distance allows the user to take macro shots while maintaining a sufficient distance from such subjects like timid insects that are likely to escape if you move in too close. Also, with this longer working distance, you can prevent capturing the shadow of the lens barrel as is often the case with conventional macro lenses with insufficient working distances.

1As of February 1, 2009, according to our research of 50-60mm life-size macro lenses
2As of February 1, 2009, according to our research of 50-60mm life-size macro lenses

4. Meticulous countermeasures against ghosting and flare

Tamron employed new BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) multi-layer coatings in order to ensure optimum performance in all photographic situations. The new BBAR coatings enhance the light transmission factors in both the short and long wavelength ranges, a condition that was thought incompatible with conventional anti-reflection coating technology. In addition, Tamron employs internal surface coatings (coatings on cemented surfaces of lens elements) for sharpness, high colour reproduction performance and superior colour balance.

MECHANICAL FEATURES

1. Lightweight and compact macro lens boasts F/2.0 fast maximum aperture

In order to prevent the lens from becoming bulky due to the fast F/2.0 maximum aperture, Tamron’s mechanical engineers thoroughly reviewed the internal constructions of conventional macro lenses and improved the accuracy of precision components by combining Tamron’s accumulated mechanical engineering techniques. Through the employment of precision injection-molded engineering plastic parts with high reliability, Tamron realized a compact body that measures only 73mm ( 2.9in.) in its maximum diameter and weighs a mere 400g (14.1oz.).

2. Internal focusing system for enhanced ease of use

The lens employs an internal focusing (IF) system without changing the overall length of the lens due to focusing. Since the front group of the lens does not extend, the lens is particularly easy to use in close focusing ranges. Tamron has realized the working distance of 100mm, the longest distance among lenses in this class4. The internal focusing system combined with new optical solutions to realize this longer working distance allows the user to enjoy macro photography comfortably while maintaining an adequate distance from subjects.

4As of February 1, 2009, according to our research of 50-60mm life-size macro lenses

3. Full-time manual control mechanism

Delicate focusing control is essential in macro photography. The lens incorporates a full-time manual control mechanism that enables the user to manually adjust focus without engaging the AF/MF switchover button, even when in the auto-focus mode. In addition, the lens employs a large focus control ring to ensure a solid grip and precise control when manually focusing.

4. Simple and attractive outer design

The lens employs a new outer design that is more refined and smoother in its overall contours by minimizing concavity, convexity and variations in its profile to match various digital SLR cameras. The lens barrel features a delicate matte finish, which enhances the high quality appearance of the lens.

Petition to remove photography restrictions in public places

Simon Taylor of phooto.co.uk, has started a petition to remove the somewhat draconian-sounding restrictions on photography in public places in the UK, imposed last month by the government.

If you didn't know already; on the 16th of February, the Government passed a law (in the Counter Terrorism Act) making it illegal to take a photograph of a police officer, military personnel or member of the intelligence services - or a photograph which "may be of use for terrorism". This definition is vague at best, and open to interpretation by the police - who under Home Secretary guidelines can "restrict photography in public places".

The deadline to sign up by is 31 August 2009.

Mamiya intros DL33 in North America

Elmsford, NY – March 17, 2009 –

The successful introduction of the Mamiya DL28, in addition to requests from professional photographers throughout the U.S., has prompted Mamiya America to announce the next level in high-end digital camera systems – the Mamiya DL33.

“In the world of medium format digital photography, many photographers have to choose between price and performance,” states Jeff Karp, Mamiya Product Marketing Manager. “The new Mamiya DL33 Digital Camera System offers the best of both worlds by providing medium format performance at a price that serious photographers can afford.”

The Mamiya DL33 Digital Camera System offers professional features and benefits that are not found in other camera systems. For example, even though the DL33’s resolution is an impressive 33 Megapixels, its large sensor allows a pixel size of 7.2 microns. At 36 x 48mm, the DL33’s sensor is twice the size of full frame DSLR cameras. Larger pixels also produce images with unmatched richness and color accuracy, smooth, subtle transitions from tone to tone and striking highlight and shadow detail. In addition, the larger format produces images with a more three-dimensional look. The 3.5-inch touch screen, the largest in the industry, offers a bright, high-contrast display ideal for outdoor or indoor work.

The DL33 combines the professionally proven Mamiya 645AFD III camera system with the innovative 33 megapixel Aptus-II 7 Digital Back from Leaf. Together they work as an integral unit with an intuitive ease that virtually any photographer will appreciate. The 645AFD III body has a new coreless motor for faster, more accurate autofocusing and an enhanced interface system that provides total communication between the camera, lens and digital back.

With 16-bit capture, 12-stop dynamic range and an ISO range of 50-800, the Mamiya DL33 is a full-featured professional digital solution. The 33 MP back produces a huge 67Mb RAW file that can be converted into jpegs, 8-bit or 16-bit tiff files (a 16-bit tiff file is 190 Mb). Files of this quality deliver the information needed for striking enlargements of virtually any size. And for those times when you can’t get close enough to your subject, you’ll have the confidence to crop a small portion of the image without a noticeable loss in quality.

In addition to using the included Leaf Capture 11.2 software, you can also open Leaf RAW files with commonly used programs including Adobe Photoshop CS3/4 (with the latest version of ACR software), Lightroom 2 and Apple Aperture 2.

When utilizing the fastest compact flash media storage currently available, the Aptus II 7 back can capture images at approximately 1 frame per second. You can also use the included FireWire cable and Leaf Capture 11.2 software to shoot directly to your computer.

“Many digital photographers are realizing that they need the increased performance that only medium format can offer,” says Karp. “That’s why Mamiya is continuing to receive requests for higher resolution digital systems. With the new Mamiya DL33, we can satisfy their demands today.”

Special consumer introductory offer!

During the months of April and May, customers who purchase a Mamiya DL33 will receive a FREE AF 55mm f2.8 or AF 150mm f3.5 lens directly from Mamiya (an $1100 value).

For more product details and the downloadable “Free Lens” coupon, please visit www.Mamiya.com

The Mamiya DL33 will be available April 2009. MAP price is $19,999.

Redesigned Think Tank Sunscreen Just Released

From the press release:

Processing and transmitting photographs from remote locations can be hard enough, but adding extreme sun, wind and other natural elements can be a real hassle. We have solved this problem with the redesigned Pixel Sunscreen 2.0. This portable spring loaded sunscreen instantly pops open for quick access. We have completely reengineered our previous version after extensive research and feedback from scores of professional photographers. After many months of research and development, our efforts have really paid off with the following features and enhancements:

Portability - Pixel Sunscreen 2.0 folds down into a small, round portable package that is easy to transport and deploy quickly.

Darker is better - Users can se their laptop screens in even the brightest sunlight now that we have added an overhead cover that extends beyond the top of the sunscreen. This new feature gives you added cover from sunrays reflecting off of your laptop's screen.

No Slipping and Sliding - In extreme conditions, photographers need to know that their laptop and sunscreen are safely secured on their laps. The Pixel Sunscreen 2.0 provides added security with the addition of a non-slip material on the bottom exterior fabric.

An uncluttered workspace - We have added strategically located cord and cable "slots" on the side and back. This allows your lap top to sit even deeper within the shaded area of the interior, dramatically improving visibility to your laptop screen.

In addition, there are now pockets in the interior so that you can place pens and pencils, and a movable "clip" for hanging printed material for easy reference.

Visit the Think Tank store of the DJP to order gear, and should individual orders exceed $50, you will receive a free Lens Changer 50 (or equivalent) with your order.

Winner of the Campaign Award announced

Sarah Ahmad, a photographer from Rawalpindi in Pakistan, is the winner of the Campaign Award. Introduced this year, as part of the Sony World Photography Awards, the competition created a brief for amateur photographers to answer and it sought out one image which unites a global obsession with football and a passion for photography.

The winning image of a woman preparing a meal, with one foot placed on a football, is simply titled: ‘The Love of the Game: a cook, cleaner, mother….and an attacking midfielder.’

Delly Carr, one of the world’s leading sports photographers, and chair of the judging panel commented: “This photograph is so simple, yet it speaks volumes about the sport. The image exemplifies the fact that football is indeed the World Game, a sport built on passion and fanaticism. It also attempts to express that passion makes no discrimination against gender, age, nationality, or social class.”

On hearing the news, Sarah Ahmad, who only discovered her love of photography in 2006, said: “I pinched myself several times to see whether I was dreaming. When I realized it was not a dream I ran around and screamed. I think I scared the neighbours! I had imagined great things happening for me but nothing I imagined came close to something as amazing as winning this award.”

“The Campaign Award aims to seek out a single original image which captures the spirit of football in places where you might least expect it. This year’s winner has succeeded beautifully through her interpretation by taking us beyond the traditional boundaries of the sport,” commented Yoshiyuki Nogami, Vice President of Digital Imaging at Sony Europe. “We were delighted by the enthusiastic response from talented individuals across the globe who submitted their inspiring images which reflect their passion for the game and it makes us proud to be able to nurture such wonderful talent in this competition.”

The judging panel, chaired by Delly Carr, included Shigeki Ishizuka, President of Digital Imaging Group at Sony Corporation; Yoshiyuki Nogami, Vice President of Digital Imaging at Sony Europe; and James Kennedy, Brand Communications Director at Sony Europe.

In winning the award, Sarah received two VIP tickets to the Sony World Photography Awards gala ceremony in Cannes, France (including flights and two nights’ accommodation in a luxury hotel on the famous Croisette); a Sony Alpha 350 DSLR camera and lens and will have the opportunity to be one of the photographers used in Sony’s forthcoming digital imaging FY09 campaign work, as well as receive two tickets to a South Africa World Cup game in 2010 (travel and accommodation included).

The winning photograph, along with the top 50 images entered to the competition, will be exhibited at Festival @ The Sony World Photography Awards in Cannes, April 2009

Sony World Photography Awards 2009 Winners Announced

The professional finalists and amateur winners of the 2009 Sony World Photography Awards are announced today, Tuesday 17 March.

The 44 photographers, from 22 separate countries, beat off stiff competition from the 186 shortlisted photographers, revealed last month. Each of the photographers on the list will be exhibited and honoured at the Sony World Photography Awards ceremony at the prestigious Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France, on Thursday 16 April. Of the 12 professional category winners, one photographer will be the recipient of the L’Iris D’Or, the Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year. On the night they will be awarded $25,000 along with Sony camera equipment. The winning amateur photographer, selected from the eight category finalists, will receive a $5,000 cash prize and Sony camera equipment.

The Sony World Photography Awards aim to promote the work of photographers worldwide. As one of the main prizes, the professional category finalists and amateur category winners will be showcased in the Winners’ Exhibition inside the Rotonde Lerins which takes place alongside the Festival, a week-long celebration of photography. This winner’s exhibition will then be adapted for the 2009/2010 Global Tour, which exhibits throughout leading galleries and cities around the world.

On behalf of the Honorary Judging Committee Zelda Cheatle said: "It has been a joy to work with my fellow judges. We were most diligent in being fair, discussions were fruitful, and every entrant was given a serious viewing. It was an eye opener to see entries from all over the globe, of every standard from the most amateur of approaches to the sophisticated and experienced professional. It is with great pleasure that we present this year’s Sony World Photography Award winners."

Astrid Merget, Event Director, adds: "Photography is a powerful medium that documents current social, political, environmental and cultural affairs. It has the ability to educate, inform, motivate, entertain, change views or simply share cultural and social trends. This year’s finalists beautifully highlight the ability of the still image to do all of this and more."
Yoshiyuki Nogami, Vice President of Digital Imaging at Sony Europe, commented: "We’ve been honoured to once again lend our full support to this unique global showcase for professional and amateur photography talent and have been impressed by the inspiring diversity and quality of this year’s entries."
