Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 19 August 2010 – Nikon Europe is pleased to announce the release of the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR, a brand new 5x zoom lens for FX format D-SLR photographers. The 24-120mm focal length continues to be a unique proposition in the NIKKOR lens range and the new version features a fixed f/4 aperture throughout the zoom range. It incorporates Nano Crystal coat and Nikon’s second generation VRII system.
Zurab Kiknadze, Product Manager Lenses, Accessories & Software, Nikon Europe says: “The AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR lens offers excellent value and performance in a compact package for adventurous photographers everywhere. It is the second f/4 aperture VR zoom lens introduced this year that broadens the options for Nikon photographers.”

The AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR covers a NIKKOR exclusive zoom range of 24mm to 120mm, ideal for events and travel photography. The fixed f/4 aperture enables the photographer to manage the depth of field effectively throughout the zoom range. Whatever the subject, from expansive landscapes to isolating portraits, the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR does it with ease.

Hold Still

The AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR is equipped with Nikon’s second generation Vibration Reduction system (VR II) that offers compensation equivalent to a shutter speed of approximately four stops faster and couples well with the f/4 fixed aperture under low light conditions. The system incorporates two modes: Normal for general handheld shooting and Active to compensate for the mechanical vibration frequencies caused by planes and moving vehicles.

Brilliant quality across the zoom range

The complex optical design uses Nano Crystal coat, two ED glass elements and no less than three aspherical lens elements to maintain bright, high contrast images under a wide variety of light conditions. Ghosting, flare and aberrations are minimised whilst the nine bladed diaphragm generates subtle bokeh effect in out of focus areas.

Smooth performer

The Silent Wave Motor (SWM) was specifically developed for the unique characteristics of this lens. It offers very discreet autofocus performance with instant Manual override possible in M/A mode. The zoom gearing and switch placement has been carefully designed for intuitive (blind) operation when looking through the viewfinder. The lens balances well with D-SLRs like the D700 and the barrel features a subtle indentation to assist grip when in use.

Built to move

The large zoom range is achieved in a very compact and tough construction, ideal for the adventure and travel photographer. Through extensive use of magnesium and Super Engineering Plastic components the lens is built to handle the knocks of everyday use, and rubber sealing around switches and lens mount mean moist or dusty conditions are not a problem.
The AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR takes the ‘standard zoom’ concept to another level to meet the demands of today’s high resolution FX format D-SLRs while maintaining excellent price/performance ratio.
The lens is supplied with a dedicated hood HB-53 and a soft pouch.nd

Nikon adds AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR to range

This new budget lens for the DX user will be available from the 2nd September at a retail price of $399 / £369 / 438 Euros.
media_1282203661010.png
Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 19 August 2010 – Nikon Europe today announces a new super telephoto zoom lens – the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR. With a focal length ranging from 55mm to 300mm (equivalent to 82.5mm to 450mm on DX format D-SLRs) it enables the user to really get up close and personal with distant subjects.
Zurab Kiknadze, Product Manager Lenses, Accessories & Software, Nikon Europe BV, says: “The AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR is a really useful and economical second lens alongside today’s standard 18-55mm kit lenses, enabling coverage of all subjects both near and far. The compact dimensions and lightweight construction make it an ideal choice for the compact D-SLR customer.”

Go further for less

The 5.5 times zoom ratio offers flexibility by drastically extending the telephoto reach. With 300mm (450mm on DX format cameras) at the telephoto end, this lens leads the way in affordable and portable telephoto photography, ideal for family sport events and holidays.

Hold Steady

Incorporating the latest VR II (second generation Vibration Reduction) technology, the lens delivers sharper images when the camera is hand-held. This is especially useful when using slower shutter speeds at longer focal lengths, or when shooting in low light.

Keep Quiet

The AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR incorporates Nikon’s SWM (Silent Wave Motor). This ensures that the autofocus is fast and quiet so you don’t miss that crucial moment, nor draw attention to yourself in more private settings.
The AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR incorporates high quality ED and new HRI (High Refractive Index) glass elements to help deliver crisp images, even under harsh lighting conditions. The lens has a weather sealed mount, which means you can take it anywhere, without having to worry about moisture and dust infiltrating the lens or camera sensor.
Ready for adventure, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR is an affordable and compact lens that will be a welcome addition to any camera bag. The lens is supplied with HB-57 lens hood to prevent flare in strong light and a lens pouch for safe storage and transportation. The lens will also be available in zoom kits with Nikon’s popular D-SLR range.l

Nikon announces AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR

This new FX format zoom featuring an almost 11x zoom range, is the full-frame equivalent of Nikon's most popular zoom, the DX 18-200mm. It will be available from 2nd September at the retail price of $1049 / £869 / 1030 Euros.
media_1282203570073.png
Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 19 August 2010 – Nikon Europe is pleased to announce the introduction of the AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR with a totally new zoom range to the NIKKOR line-up. Featuring almost 11x zoom ratio from 28mm to 300mm this versatile optic brings new levels of flexibility to FX format DSLR users.
Zurab Kiknadze, Product Manager Lenses, Accessories and Software, Nikon Europe says: “We are really excited about this new, all-round lens in the NIKKOR range. The DX format 18-200mm proved to be a massive success, and we are happy to introduce FX format customers to the same advantages this lens can offer.

Extended 10.7x Zoom Ratio

The AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR’s huge 10.7 zoom ratio makes it the ultimate ‘walkabout’ lens. With an impressive 28-300mm focal range it is set to become a very popular all-rounder for those seeking ultimate coverage from a single lens, useful when travelling light, or working from a fixed position. The flexible aperture range keeps the lens size and weight to a minimum while still providing attractive depth of field effects at the telephoto end.

Advanced Vibration Reduction system

Nikon’s exclusive second generation Vibration Reduction system (VRII) enables steady hand-held shooting at all focal lengths with two modes: Normal and Active. The optical VR system also stabilises the viewfinder image, enabling more accurate autofocus acquisition and framing, especially at the longer focal lengths of the 300mm zoom range, where lighter weight lenses can increase the risk of unwanted camera shake.

State of the art optical construction

Despite the high zoom ratio, the lens features two ED and three aspherical elements to effectively manage the risk of aberrations that can occur with super-zoom lenses. The lens can focus as close as 50cm at all focal lengths for added flexibility.

Fast Handling

The Silent Wave Motor (SWM) was designed specifically to deliver quiet and accurate AF operation across the extended zoom range with intuitive manual override. A zoom lock switch prevents ‘zoom creep’ (the lens moving under its own weight when tilted during transportation) and maintains compact dimensions when not in use. The lens construction features extensive use of magnesium for durability and provides well-balanced handling.

Complete with dedicated HB-50 hood and soft pouch, the AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR weighs in at an economical 800g.

Nikon outs new AF-S 85mm f/1.4G Nikkor

Rumoured for ages, Nikon has finally answered requests for an update to the AF-D 85mm f/1.4. But there's no VR and Nikon didn't use the opportunity to match rival Canon and offer an f/1.2 maximum aperture. The new lens will be available from the 2nd September at a retail price of $1699 / £1499.99 / 1776 Euros.

This lens supersedes the highly acclaimed AF NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4D IF with a totally new optical design, Silent Wave Motor (SWM) and Nano Crystal Coat, making it the essential choice for today’s portrait and fashion photographer. This lens continues the rich legacy of NIKKOR 85mm optics and reflects Nikon’s continuing dedication to optical innovation.

Zurab Kiknadze, Product Manager Lenses, Accessories & Software, Nikon Europe says: “The new AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G takes portraiture to another level. Lenses like this encapsulate what the NIKKOR brand stands for: amazing contrast and resolution, with unique bokeh qualities.” He added: “We think it will set a new benchmark for stills photographers as well as the growing army of videographers using D-SLRs like the D3S.”

Bokeh Master

The AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G is designed to be the ultimate optic for professional portraiture. The fast f/1.4 aperture provides excellent subject-background separation, whilst the rounded nine-blade diaphragm renders stunning bokeh with smooth out of focus areas.

Leading Light

The AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G features a newly-developed optical system with 10 elements in 9 groups and incorporates Nikon’s exclusive anti-reflection Nano Crystal coat, drastically reducing ghosting and flare to deliver rich, high contrast images even under the most testing lighting conditions.

Smooth Operator

The AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G features a dedicated Silent Wave Motor (SWM) to ensure quiet and accurate focusing. The gearing mechanism has been refined to offer extremely smooth operation when using Manual focus.

Tough Customer

As you would expect, the lens has the tough NIKKOR magnesium body and sealing against moisture and dust to continue working in the toughest of shooting conditions. Weighing in at 595g, it balances well on Nikon’s advanced and professional D-SLRs like the D700 and D3 series cameras.

The lens is supplied with a hood HB-55 and a soft pouch.

Herman Leonard, jazz photographer, dies aged 87

media_1281958874763.png

Pasadena, CA (PRWEB) August 16, 2010
Herman Leonard, a celebrated photographer whose iconic images of Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, and Frank Sinatra documented one of the most creative eras of jazz from the late 1940’s through the 1960’s, has died. He was 87.

Leonard died August 14, 2010 at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

Leonard was best known for his smoky, backlit portraits of jazz artists in New York, Paris and London. His images graced the covers of numerous albums and helped to form the visual archetype of the jazz musician.

Born and raised in Allentown, PA in 1923, at age 9, Herman Leonard witnessed an image being developed in his brother’s darkroom and became enthralled with the magic of photography. When it came time for college, Leonard chose Ohio University in Athens, the only university at the time to offer a degree in Photography. His college studies were interrupted from 1943-1945 as Leonard served with the United States Army in Burma with the 13th Mountain Medical Battalion as an anesthetist. Leonard returned to college and graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree.

Leonard started his photography career in 1947 as an apprentice with master portrait photographer, Yousuf Karsh. After one year with Karsh, photographing Albert Einstein, Martha Graham and other cultural icons, Karsh encouraged Leonard to break out on his own, telling him “ I know you have it in you to be a great photographer. Go out and conquer.” Upon leaving, Karsh imparted the words “Always tell the truth, but in terms of beauty.”, a credo which Leonard lived by through his photography.

In 1948 Leonard moved to New York and became involved with the jazz scene there, making agreements with club owners to photograph rehearsals in exchange for photographs for their marquees. Leonard has said his aim was “to create a visual diary of what I heard, to make people see the way the music sounded”. Leonard formed relationships with many of the musicians he photographed and remained lifelong friends with Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones and Tony Bennett.

In 1956 Leonard was chosen to be Marlon Brando's personal photographer for an extensive research trip to the Far East. In the late 1950's Leonard moved to Paris and continued to photograph the prolific jazz scene, while working in fashion, advertising, travel and editorial photography.

In 1980, Leonard moved from Paris to the island of Ibiza, where he remained until 1987. During that time Leonard rediscovered his jazz negatives and in 1985 released his first book, The Eye of Jazz, published by Hachette/Filipachi Publications. In 1988, the first exhibition of Leonard’s jazz photographs was held at the Special Photographers Company in London. The exhibit was hugely successful and over 10,000 visitors came to view the first retrospective of Leonard’s work. Leonard’s first US show premiered in 1989 and toured nationally.

In 1992, Leonard moved to New Orleans and immersed himself in the city’s lively jazz scene and exhibited his work around the world in numerous solo shows. In 1995, Leonard released his second book, Jazz Memories, published by Editions Filipacchi and in that same year was awarded an Honorary Masters of Science in Photography from The Brooks Institute of Photography. Other awards include the “Milt Hinton Award for Excellence in Jazz Photography," from Jazz Photographer’s Association in 1999, the "Excellence in Photography Award” from the Jazz Journalists Association in 2000 and a "Lifetime Achievement Award” from Downbeat Magazine in 2004. In 1997 Leonard was the subject of the Louisiana Public Broadcasting Company documentary “Frame After Frame” narrated by Tony Bennett.

In 2005, Leonard’s home and studio in New Orleans were severely damaged in Hurricane Katrina and his archive of over 8,000 prints were lost in the flood. Fortunately, his negatives were saved and housed at The Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Leonard then relocated to Los Angeles and rebuilt his life and business there. In 2006, he was the subject of the BBC/Sundance documentary “Saving Jazz”, which follows a then 82-year-old Leonard on his painful return home and his efforts to rebuild his life’s work. In 2008, Leonard was the first photographer to be granted a Grammy Foundation Grant for Preservation and Archiving, enabling him to digitize, catalogue and preserve his collection of nearly 60,000 jazz negatives.

In 2008, Leonard was presented with the Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Portraiture at the International Photography Awards. In 2009, he was Commencement Speaker and was granted an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from his alma mater, Ohio University. Also in 2009, Leonard was the official photographer for the Montreal Jazz Festival, photographing legends such as Tony Bennett and Dave Brubeck as well as newcomers such as Melody Gardot. In June 2010, The Montreal Jazz Festival awarded Leonard the Bruce Lundvall Award. In January 2010, Leonard was a guest of Lenny Kravitz in the Bahamas, where he photographed the musician in the studio working on his latest album. Leonard remained active throughout his life, photographing, printing and working on exhibition, documentary and book projects.

Leonard has five publications to his name, including the recently released The Jazz Image: Seeing Music through Herman Leonard’s Photography, published by University Press of Mississippi, the first scholarly book to examine Leonard’s work, and Jazz published by Grove Atlantic (UK) and Bloomsbury (US) due to be released in November 2010, which contains Leonard’s well known photography as well as many newly discovered images.

Leonard’s photographs have been exhibited worldwide and are in the permanent collections of many major institutions, including the Smithsonian Institution. His body of work is a historical treasure and stunning document of the evolution of modern Jazz.

Quotes
"In his long career, Herman captured it all beautifully and powerfully; however the importance of Herman’s jazz images transcends their visual appeal. They are documents of historic significance, cataloguing the development of one of the greatest art forms in American history. One cannot emphasize enough the value of Herman’s archive to our country’s musical legacy. When people think of Jazz, their mental picture is likely one of Herman’s” - Quincy Jones

“Herman is my favorite artist of any technique, he’s a painter with his camera, and he makes it look so effortless. His timing is as great as any Charlie Parker solo or Lester Young or Count Basie beat. Herman’s work will live on and in 50 years from now, when the revolution is realized, jazz will be recognized for the truly great American art form it is” - Tony Bennett

"Herman is an extraordinary talent, the greatest jazz photographer in history”
President Bill Clinton

“To speak of Herman Leonard's genius in the art of photography would be the obvious. His real gift was his execution of getting the most out of his life experience. The images that lived in his heart and mind outweighed his printed images. Herman's quench for life was insatiable right up to the very end. He lived every moment to its fullest. I was blessed to have shared beautiful moments with Herman that will be among the highlights of my life. I will continue to love you my friend.” – Lenny Kravitz –

Adobe announces Lightroom 3.2 and ACR 6.2 release candidates

Adobe has posted release candidates (a kind of advanced stage beta) for Lightroom 3.2 and the Camera RAW (ACR) version 6.2 plug-in for Photoshop CS5. This updates provides RAW file compatibility with new camera models. Most notable are the Panasonic Lumix LX5, Pentax 645D, Samsung NX10 and TL500 (EX1) compact, as well as the two Sony NEX models. The uber high end Leica S2 also sees an update for colour and noise profiles, ann interesting addition as the camera ships with Lightroom for processing RAW (DNG), after moving from Phase One's Capture One for earlier Leica models.

Lightroom 3.2 sees an enormous number of new lens profiles added, including a raft for the Pentax 645D model, suggesting perhaps that LR3 has been chosen by Pentax for supporting the new camera, instead of the usual SilkyPix utility. This would be an important consideration for professional photographers.

Need To Transfer Images From Your Eye-Fi SD Card To Your iPad? There's A Great App For That

Yes, it's true, ditch your Apple iPad Camera Connection kit right now, with ShutterSnitch you can send the images from your Eye-Fi card directly to either your iPhone or iPad.

media_1280232956089.png

This app will bring relief to many, I have been constantly asked whether it is possible to wirelessly transfer images to your iPad from your Eye-Fi card and despite it being quite a challenge, I rose to the occasion and scoured the App Store until I found Shuttersnitch. You'll need to use a router or MiFi as obviously your iPad cannot create its own Wi-Fi network.

Then, once you have captured all of your images to the EyeFi card you will be able to beam your photos straight onto your iPad, or iPhone - there is also the facility to set up custom visual and audible alerts to let you know the shutter speed, ISO, aperture, focal length with more options penned for the future.

This app will appeal to many photographers and for $7.99 is an absolute bargain. Download here.

Tamron Europe found in favour over illegal imports

media_1280489350820.png

TAMRON Europe GmbH, Cologne, Germany attains drastic 2 Million Euros penalty verdict against Ruitenberg / Crown in the Netherlands for dealing with illegal imports

Cologne, July 28th, 2010 – On June 30th 2010 the district court in Utrecht/Netherlands (file reference number 262876/HA ZA 09-458) rendered a drastic verdict against Mr. H.P. Ruitenberg and 4 respective entities of the so-called Crown group in favour of Tamron Europe, Cologne, Germany. After an extremely harsh and meticulous prosecution Tamron Europe`s lawyers succeeded in providing evidence that Mr Ruitenberg and several of his respective Crown companies violated the trademark rights of Tamron by dealing with illegally imported merchandise, which was not imported into the EU by or on behalf of Tamron. The court could be successfully convinced of the damaging impact to Tamron Europe`s business resulting from the illegal trade. The verdict includes a drastic penalty of 2.000.000 Euros,- for non-compliance with an earlier verdict that Tamron obtained in its favour. Tamron Europe urgently suggests all retailers in Europe to purchase Tamron merchandise solely from unsuspicious and fully reliable sources, as the company will not hesitate to take similar drastic legal action against any kind of trade with illegally imported Tamron products.
