We're great fans of GeoLog Tag here at the Digital Journal of Photography and also at our sister site, The App Whisperer , we have reviewed it in the past and always been impressed. This review concentrates on the latest updated version 3.3 that now includes support for geotagging Samsung RAW (SRW) photos, a fix for Mac geotagging when traveling through different timezones and a fix for Mac geotagging on an ad-hoc Wi-Fi network.
We put this app through its paces as the competition is heating up in the Apple app store of this style of app. Read our extensive review here...

Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep - Deeply Powerful Emotional Photography

One of the most emotional articles I have ever read has been posted to the PhotoShelter website today. It details the Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep Foundation (NILMDTS), a non-profit organization that administers a network of more than 7,000 volunteer photographers in the United States and 25 countries throughout the world.

It is the most amazing organization run with the most incredible volunteer photographers. All the babies shown in these beautiful portraits were stillborn, all the images were gifted to the parents as "remembrance photography."

media_1290592930393.png

To read more about this phenomenal charity and to read the full article, head to PhotoShelter here.

media_1290592983072.png

"NILMDTS is an incredible organization and being able to offer support to families experiencing loss through your photography and time is definitely very worthwhile," said Zenia Anderson, a professional photographer based in Southern California.

Photographers interested in volunteering, or learning more about NILMDTS can visit the photographer's area of the organization's website.

About the Photographer

Britta Jaschinski, born in Bremen, trained as a photographer in Germany before studying the art of photography in England. Jaschinski is a photographer of nature – but not in its conventional forms. While her work encompasses the inherent beauty and purity of the natural world, she is also keenly attuned to the frailty of nature: its susceptibility to manipulation and desecration at the hands of its most self-important element, homo sapiens.

Jaschinski has worked extensively to document the sad and scary world of captive animals. Her portraits of these animals are poignant and often pathetic. Dark, disjointed representations of creatures in concrete and metal compounds convey the displacement that characterized their existence. Jaschinski currently focuses on animals in their natural habitat to illuminate the beauty and fragility of our planet. Jaschinski’s images owe their inspiration to art rather than documentation. She explores new ways of looking at animals, removed from conventional representation and cultural baggage. Her images provoke questions about the destiny of life on earth. Phaidon Press and Thames & Hudson have published her books, she has won several awards and exhibits her images world-wide at prestigious art festivals, museums, auction houses and galleries.

I arrived in Ndutu only days after a huge bushfire had ripped through the area, burning down a vast number of majestic acacia trees. I could smell ash and cinders in the air. The destructive power of these fires is immense. I found many empty, whitened tortoise shells and saw disorientated impala and dik-dik wandering around with nowhere to hide.

And then, a cheetah appeared on the blackened soil. This fire must have been a windfall for large cats - their prey was confused and out in the open. But the cheetah, too, looked unsettled, alienated and lost - almost ghostly. I took the photo and then watched as he melted into the singed background. The cheetah is endangered due to loss of habitat, reduced prey and direct persecution. I feel this photo symbolises how exposed and vulnerable this species is.

Introduction To Digital Photography - Karl Taylor - iPhone/iPad App Review

Karl Taylor is a British Professional Photographer, living and working in the enviable location of Guernsey in the Channel Islands.

Karl has built up a solid reputation as professional photographer and teacher alike. He regularly shoots for several of the country’s top corporations including HSBC, Specsavers and Harrods. He runs various photography courses from his studio and also sells a range of Training DVD's, giving step by step photography techniques. More recently though Karl has turned his ideas to the awesome world of apps that we so know and love and has created five video technique universal apps to really help you get the most out of your photography.

This review concentrates on the first app of the series, Introduction to Digital Photography- read this now...

Home Page

media_1289830971012.png

The current version of this app is 2.0 and is published by Netframes, it weighs in at 440 MB and costs $49.99.

Once you have downloaded this app either to your iPhone or iPad, or both in fact, you will then see the home page as above. You can view the photography masterclass either chapter by chapter or you can click on Play All to watch the complete video.

Menu

media_1289831017588.png

One key and very useful aspect of this app is in the top left hand corner. There is a little icon and when you click on that, it gives you a list of a range of photographic terms, such as aperture and depth of field, composition, exposure etc - if you click on any one of those terms, it will take you directly to the section within the video where Karl is explaining it. This is a great idea and incredibly useful, even if you only need to brush up on a couple of things.

Menu - Aperture & Depth of Field

media_1289831051015.png

From the Menu section, I selected Aperture & Depth of Field and you can see from the time schedule above, it has taken me to the 27th minute of the video where this section is explained, in detail.

Explanation

media_1289831089778.png

Here Karl can be seen clearly explaining Aperture and Depth of Field to the viewer.

Chapters

media_1289831119467.png

If you select Chapters from the Home Page you will see a complete list of all the chapters within the video. As in the Menu section above, if you select any chapter you will be taken directly to beginning of that section. Again this works faultlessly and is very fluid.

media_1289831148171.png

On Location

media_1289831179105.png

Whatever aspect of photography Karl is demonstrating he will take you to it. So if that happens to be right by the sea or in the studio, he will go there to make sure you completely understand that specific part that he is explaining.

In the Studio

media_1289831211681.png

Here Karl is demonstrating the differences between using a 22 mega pixel camera and an 8 mega pixel camera. First, he uses a model to take shots with both cameras. Not only is Karl about to explain and demonstrate the difference in image quality between the two photographs but he also showing you how to work well with a model.

media_1289831237834.png

Karl then goes on to show you how to get the images on to your computer from the camera and then clearly shows the differences between the two images of different resolutions.

Conclusion

media_1289666674607.png

Well, I can honestly say watching this app and the others in the series is like a breath of fresh air. Karl's enthusiasm and passion for photography knows no bounds, if you're not hooked on photography before you download this app, you certainly will be afterwards.

This is exactly the type of app the photography enthusiasts wants to download. It is more costly than most photography apps but you have to appreciate the level of planning, commitment and professionalism that has gone into it. These are very high end quality apps and if you want to learn more about photography then this is your starting point. Download now.

ProCamera + GeoTagging iPhone App Review

The ProCamera iPhone app is extensive, it incorporates many features that will appeal to pro photographers. Not that this app is designed to replace the full functionality or speed of a DSLR but it represents an extremely good app to have on your iPhone to capture that elusive photo and with its extensive features gives you the opportunity to utilize the possibility of having a camera with you at all times. As we all know the best camera is the camera that's with you and by having this app on your iPhone you certainly get that. Take a look at our review below:

Expert Mode

media_1287919696105.png

One of the particular things I like about this app is within the so called, Expert Mode - here you can gain greater control of your image by focusing on specific areas within your photograph, ie selective focusing as well as exposure and it also incorporates a white balance lock. These facilities are available within the photo and video mode of ProCamera.

In order to activate this feature, with the app open you will see two boxes, a blue and a yellow box, as above. The blue box is the focusing box and the yellow box the exposure one. All you need to do is drag each box around within the image to lock the focus and exposure within different sections of the image. This is an exceptional feature within an iPhone app and one that is seriously welcomed.

Video Recording

media_1287923123999.png

Video recording is a very important factor within photography market at the moment and is growing day by day in popularity. To have the feature available within an iPhone photography app is very important, but it has to work well. Fortunately ProCamera does not disappoint in this respect.

The Video recording mode is simple to access, just select video camera within the menu and start recording by tapping the button within the center of the toolbar. To stop the recording just tap the stop button on the right of the toolbar. Again, you can selective focus and exposure specific areas of the recording by tapping the desired spot on the screen before and while actually recording. Despite not having a pause icon within the recording mode it is possible to start rerecording again simply enough, although the counter starts counting from the beginning. It would be a nice but not an essential feature to see a pause icon within the recording mode and one that the developer should be able to add with a future update.

GPS/Exif Data

media_1287924258691.png

This app has recently been updated to include GPS tagging - known as geotagging - this is a great and essential feature, no doubt about that. But, perhaps even more importantly it includes Exif data - this is something many pros want to know about time and again.

I have used the image above of my MacBook Pro keyboard for demonstration purposes.

Pro

media_1287924333132.png

By selecting the center icon on the row below it is possible to see information regarding this shot. Size, date, time, flash, aperture, exposure, location and direction are all recorded.

Expert

media_1287924397898.png

Within the expert mode of that screen it is possible to see the colormodel, DPI height and width, depth, orientation, pixel height, ISO speed rating, metering mode, shutter speed value and so on.

Map

media_1287924461020.png

Within the Map section you can pinpoint the place the image was taken and within the Satellite mode you can get a complete overview.

Photo Suite

media_1287925342789.png

Another great feature of this app is the ability to adjust the photo within the app by way of using Photo Suite. It is possible to adjust the brightness, exposure, digital flash and to change the image to either black and white or sepia modes, without leaving the app. Once you are happy with the image you can share it via email again within the app.

Conclusion

media_1287925358204.png

I have to say that this really is a great photo app and one that should be on your iPhone. It is priced within the app store for $2.99 and to my mind represents an absolute bargain. In the future it would be good to see an HDR and burst mode and again this could be incorporated within a future update but at present If you only want one photography app on your device, then make it ProCamera now. Need To Transfer Images From Your Eye-Fi SD Card To Your iPad? There's A Great App For That

Yes, it's true, ditch your Apple iPad Camera Connection kit right now, with ShutterSnitch you can send the images from your Eye-Fi card directly to either your iPhone or iPad.

media_1280232956089.png

This app will bring relief to many, I have been constantly asked whether it is possible to wirelessly transfer images to your iPad from your Eye-Fi card and despite it being quite a challenge, I rose to the occasion and scoured the App Store until I found Shuttersnitch. You'll need to use a router or MiFi as obviously your iPad cannot create its own Wi-Fi network.

Then, once you have captured all of your images to the EyeFi card you will be able to beam your photos straight onto your iPad, or iPhone - there is also the facility to set up custom visual and audible alerts to let you know the shutter speed, ISO, aperture, focal length with more options penned for the future.

This app will appeal to many photographers and for $7.99 is an absolute bargain. Download here.
