The New Nikon P7000

Is this Nikon's answer to the Canon G11? Many fans seem to think so. Interestingly it has a lower megapixel count that the P6000. The P7000’s superb image quality is guaranteed by a wide-angle 7.1x zoom NIKKOR lens giving a 28mm to 200mm range (35mm format equivalent), with optical Vibration Reduction (VR), two ED glass elements and Nikon’s brand new EXPEED C2 image processing system. The large 10.1 effective megapixel 1/1.7” CCD sensor facilitates wide dynamic range and exceptional low light performance whilst the 7.5cm (3.0”) high resolution LCD (920K dot) monitor assists composition, movie making and playback in brilliant detail.
media_1283934718143.png
Mark Pekelharing, Product Manager, Consumer Products at Nikon Europe B.V., says: “The COOLPIX P7000 boasts a raft of advanced features and ergonomics found in SLR cameras, making it the ultimate compact option for advanced SLR users and professional photographers who want high quality images in a discrete and responsive body.” He added, “Our professional customers have really helped to drive decisions about the feature set, and the results speak for themselves; great quality photography…anywhere”.
media_1283934669684.png
The P7000 is packed with cutting-edge technology to ensure the best image quality available, with a large 1/1.7” sensor and EXPEED C2 image processing system to provide enhanced low light performance and movie recording. Its 7.1x zoom NIKKOR lens has two ED glass elements to reduce chromatic aberration and fringing at longer focal lengths. What is more, it also includes a built-in ND filter to expand exposure options in very bright conditions.

The P7000’s wide sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 3200 is expandable to Hi 1 (ISO 6400 equivalent), while low noise night mode ensures fine results in extremely low light conditions, such as in candlelit interiors and a Noise Reduction (NR) adjustment function enables photographers to manage the impact of noise in their images.

For situations where choosing the right setting proves difficult, D-Lighting automatically ensures images look natural, rescuing underexposed shadows caused by very high contrast lighting conditions. COOLPIX in-camera Picture Controls, based on the technology from Nikon's award winning digital SLRs, allow the user to manage camera processing according to personal taste while the new bracketing functions enable the photographer to take sequences with slightly different settings, varying exposure, ISO sensitivity, or white balance, and select the one that best suits the intended effect. A newly-added Virtual Horizon can also be displayed in the LCD to make sure the camera position is perfectly aligned.

Enhanced recording and playback

media_1283934773723.png
Some occasions call for capturing more than a picture, so the COOLPIX P7000 comes with an HD movie recording (720p) function. Stereo sound can be simultaneously recorded using a built-in microphone, while the microphone jack enables the use of an external microphone. The extra large 7.5cm (3.0”) ultra-high resolution (920K dot) LCD display offers almost 100% sRGB colour space to make image reviewing a pleasure and the optical viewfinder features diopter adjustment. In addition to this, the HDMI port enables instant sharing on external HD displays.
The P7000’s in-camera editing allows users to take control over their pictures. Tone level information is displayed on a histogram, and exposure compensation, aperture, shutter speed and ISO sensitivity can be minutely adjusted while confirming highlights, shadows and intermediate tone.

For those who prefer to revise their images on a PC or Mac, images can be stored in the enhanced NRW+ (COOLPIX RAW) format, providing an uncompressed digital “negative” which enables advanced editing. NRW+ files are compatible with Nikon’s bundled ViewNX 2 software as well as the optional image editing software Capture NX2

Easy operation, everywhere

media_1283934815569.png
The P7000 has been designed for those who wish to have complete control over their photography with the familiar intuitive layout of buttons and dials found on Nikon DSLR cameras such as Command dial and AE-L/AF-L buttons. The P7000 also features an ‘analogue retro’ dial to manage exposure compensation levels in 1/3 EV steps. Manual control over other commonly used functions is accessible via the Quick Menu dial. A User-Setting Function enables users to switch zoom position to a preset focal length, as if using interchangeable lenses. The settings at each zoom position can also be customised according to the user’s intention. Alongside this, the added Zoom Memory function allows one-touch switching to any focal length setting, using a new manual mode dial.

The compact system camera

media_1283934878421.png
The COOLPIX P7000 forms the core of a mini-system and is i-TTL compatible with Nikon’s acclaimed Speedlights, a new WC-75A wide-angle convertor for a 21mm equivalent field of view and infra-red remote control ML-L3. The P7000 also comes complete with ViewNX 2 software, long life battery EN-EL14 and charger MH-24. The camera can be further expanded using an external microphone (not available from Nikon). To protect the camera, an optional carry case is also available (CS-P06).

EXPEED C2

media_1283935096648.png
The original EXPEED image processing system incorporated all of the accumulated expertise and technologies developed throughout Nikon’s long history. Now the latest evolution of Nikon’s renowned system, EXPEED C2, expands the possibilities of photography even further, with enhanced movie recording, high-sensitivity performance and maximum image quality. EXPEED C2 maximizes sensor performance for clear, lifelike images that exhibit vivid colors, reduced noise and smooth tonal gradations for outstanding photos and movies.

ViewNX 2

media_1283935154928.png
ViewNX 2 is an all-in-one software package that enables users to quickly import, browse, edit and share still images and movies. Building upon the highly successful ViewNX software, ViewNX 2 is a user-friendly suite that offers a huge range of features, going well beyond those supplied as part of a PC’s operating system. Newly-incorporated advanced movie-editing functions have been taken directly from Nikon’s award-winning DSLR range, enabling users to trim clips and blend still images into stunning movie footage. ViewNX 2 comes with all Nikon digital cameras and is also available as a free download.

Leica add ostrich finish outer to limited edition X1

I really wish Leica wouldn't do this sort of thing. I mean it's fine to offer the embossed ostrich skin as an alternative to the leather finish on the standard X1, but to call it a limited edition is a bit much. Pricing is 230,300 yen ($2750) but availability is still to be announced. Just 80 units will be offered for sale.

Carl Zeiss roll out range of UV and Polarizer filters

After dropping hints a few days ago, Carl Zeiss has announced they're to produce a range of UV and polariser filters in 58, 67, 72 and 82mm filter threads. Oddly, the popular pro size of 77mm has been omitted. The company has also announced a new shoulder strap using patented air-cell padding. As of posting, there's no indication of price or availability.

media_1283860139077.png

OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 07.09.2010.
Carl Zeiss now offers photographers special accessories to support their work with ZEISS lenses. The new UV and POL filters from Carl Zeiss are optically and mechanically tailored to the high-quality ZEISS SLR lenses and protected against light reflections with the ZEISS T* multi-coating. Because good optics can be somewhat heavy at times, Carl Zeiss now offers a special camera strap with air cell padding for SLR cameras.

“It is important for us to not only deliver ideal image results, but to also make photography something to remember. This does not stop at lenses. We have also taken the demands and needs of photographers into consideration during development of our accessory products. They are the ideal addition to our ZEISS SLR lenses," explains Martin Klottig, Marketing Manager of the Camera Lens Division at Carl Zeiss AG.

The new UV and POL filters meet the highest demands on mechanical quality and can be quickly and easily changed. High-quality optical glass is tailored to the performance of ZEISS lenses, while the T* multi-coating minimizes light reflections on the glass-air surfaces and improves transmission. In addition to the filter function, the front lens element of the lens provides protection against contamination and scratches. With the standard thread diameters of 58, 67, 72 and 82 mm, the filters also fit the lenses of other manufacturers.

The camera straps ensure that your equipment does not lead to shoulder and neck strain, even when used for longer periods. Patented air cell padding and the elastic material unite comfort and maximum durability. Special quick-action locks enable users to quickly, easily and safely connect the straps to all standard SLR cameras.

Red Bull Illume 2010 Image Quest Winner Announced

Red Bull Illume, the world’s premier action and adventure sports photography competition, has revealed the winners of its 2010 Image Quest.

The Overall Winning Image

media_1283773025706.png

The finalists of the competition, sponsored by SanDisk, the global leader in flash memory cards, were unveiled during a ceremony in Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, with Chris Burkard from the USA being named as the overall winner.

His image of surfer Peter Mendria riding the waves in golden sunlight on Chile's West Coast was selected by an international panel of 53 photo experts, winning him a variety of photography products including a Leica S2 camera and a selection of SanDisk flash memory cards.

The category winners and finalists were selected from the 22,764 images submitted to the 2010 Image Quest by thousands of photographers worldwide. Fifty-three judges from picture desks across the world voted over three rounds to determine ten category winners as well as the overall winner.

Gerry Edwards, SanDisk Imaging Senior Product Marketing Manager, commented: “The entries in this year’s competition were outstanding and we are extremely proud to be a part of this prestigious event. The competition is a great way to recognise and reward the planning, time and effort that goes into capturing the perfect picture.”

The Winner With Trophy

media_1283774708789.png

I am so blessed,” said Burkard on picking up the biggest prize in freesports photography. “I feel really, really lucky just to be here and be surrounded by people I look up to and my peers. There’s something to be said to win an award in front of people you respect. So for me this is huge, a really huge honour. I’m really grateful.”

“As action sports photographers, we’re used to getting towards the action and getting close to it. And nine times out of ten, that’s what we’ll do. But I decided to get as far from the action as I could so I could show the whole landscape so people could appreciate everything that was going on and not just the surfer.”

Burkard’s image proved to be a hugely popular choice with fellow photographers and the public on the night. “The overall winning shot by Chris Burkard is amazing,” said New Creativity finalist Silvano Zeiter. “When I saw the random pictures exhibited on the Red Bull Illume website, I looked through them and saw that one picture by Chris Burkard. I made a screen shot and said to my friend, ‘This is going to be shot!’”

Fred Montagne, the previous winner of the Image Quest in 2007 also thought Burkard was a worthy winner. “My favorite photo was the overall winner by Chris Burkard, really. I like these kind of photos where you see the athlete in a big environment. It’s not just about the action, it’s about the action in some crazy environment. I like when the individual is really small. It would still be a good photo without the surfer.”

Nikon intro new rear lens cap

Okay, so it's not as big a news as the AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.4G ED we're all expecting in just over a weeks time (I'm guessing), but I never really liked the LF-1 rear lens cap - after all it doesn't seal that well and certainly could of been made to mate with the rubber gasket on the pro-Nikkors.

media_1283764407261.png

Anyhow, this site say the new cap is called the LF-4 (even I can work that out without using Google translator - it's in Japanese). I wonder what happened to the LF-2 and 3? Was one of those the slight amendment for non-English speakers with the Pac-Man type icon that replaced the word "Open"? Who cares? Anyway this looks like a substantial revision, and I wonder if it's made in green for use in the factory? The price is 378 yen, or around $5, which will end up as £5 in UK.

UPDATE 07/09/10: I now have a new AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 with the new LF-4, and while the rear cap doesn't seal with the rear rubber gasket, it covers more of the mount than the LF-1. It's also easier to grip and it certainly feels more secure when attached. Oh, and yeah, the other very welcome benefit, is that it now locks on the body cap (BF-1A and older BF-1 manual focus version), so they'll stay together in your camera bag (so you can loose both together, rather than one or the other). Now where is the rumored AF-S 35mm f/1.4G?

Zeiss launch 35mm f/1.4 for Nikon and Canon

Carl Zeiss has introduced a super-fast, manual focus 35mm prime with a maximum aperture of f/1.4, for Nikon and Canon EOS users. Recommended retail is £1275, 1386 Euros, plus tax, and will be available for sale early 2011.

media_1283682694859.png

The image above shows the Canon ZE version, the Nikon ZF.2 has a manual aperture ring.

Sample photo

media_1283682602774.png

OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 01.09.2010.
A woman is sitting at the bar of a dimly-lit cafe. Lost in thoughts, she doesn’t notice the glass of wine the bartender places before her. From a distance, a photographer tries to capture her mood. He brings her face, which is leaning toward her phone, into focus. Everything around her becomes a blur, and the lights in the background coalesce into a wild “dance” of diffuse shapes.

This shot will only work with a fast lens with short focal length and harmonious bokeh. Carl Zeiss introduces a new lens for just such images: the Distagon T* 1,4/35.

By introducing the Distagon T* 1,4/35, Carl Zeiss is complementing the Planar T*1,4/50 and T*1,4/85 lenses with a wide-angle lens that shares the same high speed. Crisp, sharp images work every time, whether at dusk or in the weak lighting conditions of a café, and without the need for a tripod. With its 35-mm, the Distagon T* 1,4/35 matches the classic and versatile standard focal lengths when used on cameras with APS-C sensor formats.

Due to the special bokeh effects in both the foreground and background areas, the Distagon T*1,4/35 opens up new creative possibilities, giving photographers more options to ‘play’ with focus. Thanks to its large focus ring, photographers can also create highly accurate, sharp pictures, even at maximum aperture opening. In addition, the optical construction of the lens guarantees high image quality across the entire image range. Furthermore, with one step less than the full aperture opening, the light fall-off toward the edges is just one f-stop.

With the ZEISS T*‘s anti-reflective coating, its sophisticated stray light reduction and the excellent flare control the new Distagon also takes pictures of bright light sources without artifacts. The Distagon T*1,4/35’s extremely long-lasting and robust all-metal precision mechanics, for which Carl Zeiss is known, make this lens perfect for use on-the-go and for photo reports.

The Distagon T* 1,4/35 will be available in first quarter of 2011 at a recommended retail price of 1385.71 euros (excluding VAT)*.

If you run both Canon and Nikon systems as I do (and Olympus as well), then buy the Nikon version and use a high-quality lens adapter such as this one as the Canon has the shorter flange focal distance (FFD)* of the two systems. It costs a little more than the standard version but allows mounting of AI-S and G-series Nikkor lenses. Metering is unaffected, as Canon cameras meter and operate in stopped down mode, and focusing is unaffected (it's a MF lens afterall).

*Most third-party manufacturers design the Nikon version first due to the maker's longer FFD, as it's easier to compensate for Canon, Pentax, Sony and the rest with their shorter registers.

OMG! Canon Create The Ultimate 'Multi-purpose' Concept Camera

This is a full working model albiet in concept form but I so want Canon to make it for real. The 4K as it is currently known shoots at 60 frames per second at 4k resolution using a single 8 megapixel 2/30inch CMOS sensor and it weighs in at only 5.5 pounds. Let's just go over that sentence, 4K resolution video is approximately quadruple the resolution of 1080p - wow.

media_1283502684091.png

The hardware is essentially a huge DSLR body packing a fixed video-style lens complete with zoom and focus controls and a high-def flip-out LCD viewfinder, the same LCD found in Canon's new XF-300 and XF-305 video cameras.

Multi-Purpose Image Capture

media_1283502716688.png

Unlike competing camera-maker RED's offerings, apparently the 4K concept is not specifically designed for digital cinema. It's actually intended to offer "multipurpose image capture" . Despite Canon admitting that the 4K will never come to market we can't help but admire Canon's brave step from the norm, wouldn't you want one?

Canon Announce Largest Ever CMOS Sensor

We're sure you've read the announcement from Canon's team last week announcing a massive 120 megapixel sensor, well this week the technicians at team Canon have announced the biggest ever CMOS sensor, measuring 202x205 mm - that's round 8 inches square; making this sensor roughly around 40 times larger than the sensor currently found in the 5D Mark II.

The New CMOS sensor - that's the one on the left

media_1283255060934.png

Canon says it'll be good for filming stars and nocturnal animals, we couldn't agree more.

Here's the full press release, if you want to have a read...

Canon Inc. announced today that it has successfully developed the world’s largest*1 CMOS image sensor, with a chip size measuring 202 x 205 mm. Because its expanded size enables greater light-gathering capability, the sensor is capable of capturing images in one one-hundredth the amount of light required by a professional-model digital SLR camera.

At 202 x 205 mm, the newly developed CMOS sensor is among the largest chips that can be produced from a 12-inch (300 mm) wafer, and is approximately 40 times the size of Canon’s largest commercial CMOS sensor.*2

In the past, enlarging the size of the sensor resulted in an increase in the amount of time required between the receiving and transmission of data signals, which posed a challenge to achieving high-speed readout. Canon, however, solved this problem through an innovative circuit design, making possible the realization of a massive video-compatible CMOS sensor. Additionally, by ensuring the cleanest of cleanroom environments during the production process, the sensor minimizes image imperfections and dust.

Because the increased size of the new CMOS sensor allows more light to be gathered, it enables shooting in low-light environments. The sensor makes possible the image capture in one one-hundredth the amount of light required by a 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor, facilitating the shooting of 60 frame-per-second video with a mere 0.3 lux of illumination.

Potential applications for the new high-sensitivity CMOS sensor include the video recording of stars in the night sky and nocturnal animal behavior.

Through the further development of distinctive CMOS image sensors, Canon will break new ground in the world of new image expression, in the area of still images as well as video.

Extend the reach of your telephoto lens with Canon’s Extender EF 1.4x III and Extender EF 2x III

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland 26th August 2010 – Canon today unveils two lens extenders designed for its L-series range of new super-telephoto lenses. Designed for photojournalists, nature and sports photographers who need to get close to distant and challenging subjects, the Extender EF 1.4x III and Extender EF 2x III increase the focal length of a lens by a factor of 1.4x and 2x respectively while still delivering superb image quality. To ensure the best possible image quality in all shooting conditions, they also combine enhanced environmental protection, redesigned optics and improved data communication between lens and camera.

Canon professional image quality
Allowing professional photographers to shoot distant subjects without having to carry a number of heavy lenses with them, these new extenders ensure there is no compromise on image quality. The Extender EF 1.4x III features seven lens elements in three groups, and the Extender EF 2x III features nine lens elements in five groups, ensuring improved optical performance. All optical elements use Canon’s Super Spectra coating, reducing ghosting and flare to minimise post-processing requirements. A new Fluorine Coating on the front and rear elements makes marks, such as spots left by water or fingerprints, much easier to clean than standard coatings.

The optical elements also feature Canon’s latest Super Spectra Coatings, optimised for both the position and type of each lens element. A SubWavelength Structure Coating (SWC), which uses microscopic cone-shaped structures smaller than a wavelength of visible light, reduces ghosting caused by light bouncing back from the imaging sensor. Fluorine coating is also used on the front and rear elements of the lenses, repelling dust and dirt for clearer shots. The coating is also water repellent, keeping the front element free of water marks and smearing by ensuring water runs off the lens quickly.

New, improved IS and rapid AF
Both models feature Canon’s new Image Stabilizer system, providing outstanding results when the photographer is moving around and when capturing moving subjects. A 4-stop advantage offers greater image quality during handheld shooting, allowing users to shoot at speeds up for four times slower than normally required with minimal additional blur. Operation of IS mode 2 has been improved when shooting panning motion and a new third IS mode has been added, assisting users when quickly switching between subjects by activating the IS unit only during exposure.

Both lenses offer a constant f/2.8 aperture, allowing photographers to shoot at faster shutter speeds and capture clear shots of fast-moving subjects. The wide aperture also allows users to creatively isolate their subjects from the background, with a nine-blade circular iris creating dramatic and striking background blur that instantly adds beauty to an image.

Fast, quiet Auto Focusing (AF) is provided by a ring-type USM, new dedicated AF algorithms and a new high-speed CPU, which offer quick and accurate focusing during shooting. Photographers can also utilise full-time manual focusing functionality, which enables the adjustment and fine-tuning of focus even when the AF system is activated, providing even greater control over image capture. A new Power Focus mode aids focusing during video shooting, allowing the photographer to smoothly adjust focus during filming by twisting the focus recall ring.

All-new premium L-series design
Developed in line with Canon’s philosophy for the elite L-series, both the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM and EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM boast a refined design that reflects their status as market-leading, benchmark lenses. Both feature a new design layout, with carefully-positioned controls that improve operation in everyday use. The AF stop buttons are now location-adjustable, improving ergonomics by allowing users to custom-select the position of the lens grip, where the AF stop buttons are located.

A choice of dedicated tripod mounts provides added flexibility, allowing photographers to use a long or short foot suitable for monopods or tripods. A new rotational mechanism for the tripod collar also provides a smoother movement when turning the lens from portrait to landscape orientation. In addition, both models feature a new high quality exterior texture, while a new shade of white casing indicates the new advanced design and higher precision that each lens offers. A new Kensington-type wire security lock has also been added, allowing photographers to keep their lenses secure during location-based shoots.

A robust weatherproof design makes both lenses suitable for use in extreme conditions when paired with a weatherproof EOS body.

Complementary, high quality lens extenders
Both new models are compatible with the new set of Canon lens extenders designed for L-series super-telephoto lenses – the Extender EF 1.4x III and Extender EF2x III. Manufactured to complement the new optical systems featured in both lenses, the Extender EF 1.4x III and Extender EF2x III will allow professionals to instantly extend the focal length of either lens by 1.4x or 2x respectively – enabling the capture of high quality, detailed images of subjects that may typically be beyond reach.

See everything through different eyes – Canon launches the EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM zoom lens

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 26 August 2010 – Canon today unveils the world’s first fisheye zoom lens offering both circular and full frame images, thanks to an extreme wide-angle focal range of 8-15mm. Replacing the EF 15mm f/2.8 fisheye, the new EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM is the latest addition to Canon’s L-series range of professional lenses, providing outstanding image quality, constant aperture throughout the zoom range and a robust design for reliable shooting in challenging weather conditions.

When paired with Canon’s full-frame DSLR bodies, such as the EOS 5D Mark II or the EOS-1Ds Mark III, professional photographers can choose to capture circular or full-frame fisheye images, allowing them to view a scene in a completely new and unique way. This new level of choice provides enhanced creative flexibility when shooting scenes such as the night sky, where the full 180º horizontal and vertical fields of view (FOV) allow every detail to be captured with incredible clarity in one single image.

When used with EOS bodies featuring APS-C or APS-H sensors, the EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM produces a more traditional, full frame fisheye view. A zoom-lock mechanism on the lens body allows the range to be limited to the focal length that ensures the best possible full-frame view without unsightly vignetting around the edge. ‘C’ and ‘H’ markings can be found next to the zoom operation ring, indicating the wide-angle zoom position where vignette-free shooting is possible with either sensor, allowing photographers to achieve optimum results with any EOS body.

Advanced optics for professional imaging
The EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM showcases over 70 years of Canon’s optical engineering heritage, boasting 14 lens elements in 11 different groups, including one aspherical and one Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) element to correct chromatic aberration and produce high-quality, high-contrast shots with excellent colour reproduction.

Ghosting and flare caused by strong light sources can be a particular challenge when shooting at such a wide angle, and, in order to counteract these artefacts, all lens elements have been covered with Canon’s Super Spectra Coating. The inner surface of the front element also features Canon’s SubWavelength Structure Coating (SWC), which uses tiny cone-like structures, shorter than the wavelength of visible light on the surface of the lens element, to gradually slow light down until it is at the same speed as it travels through glass, removing the risk of flare occurring before the light reaches the sensor.

To maintain optimum image quality, the front and rear lens elements also feature a Fluorine Coating which actively repels water, dust and dirt, making it easier to clean the lens and leaving it unobstructed by particles.

Fast, accurate focusing and low light performance
The ultra-wide angle zoom of the EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM offers a fresh take on sporting action or architecture shots, while the constant f/4.0 aperture allows faster shutter speeds to be employed for natural-looking images in low light.

A ring-type ultrasonic motor (USM), provides quick and accurate focusing when shooting and enables a full-time manual focus functionality allowing photographers to adjust the focus of any shot, even when the AF system is activated, for even greater control over image capture and improved creative flexibility.

Built for professional performance
The EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM features a high-grade physical design that reflects its elite performance. High resistance to both dust and water enables it to be used in a range of challenging situations, and, when used with a professional EOS body, it allows continued shooting in the harshest weather conditions. The external design also features the new exterior texture, for a high quality look and feel indicative of all new L-series models.

High quality accessories
The EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM is supplied with a dedicated lens cap, lens pouch and a felt-lined lens hood EW-77 for use when using the zoom at the 15mm setting, preventing lens flare.
