Phase One announces Media Pro management utility

media_1305044500345.png

Phase One, the back maker and publisher of the outstanding Capture One raw workflow solution has announced Media Pro, a new digital asset management (DAM) utility based on iView Media Pro (this was became Microsoft Expression Media, before Phase One acquired it outright last year). As well as seamless integration with Capture One (C1), Media Pro uses that utilities RAW image rendering engine so that users can rapidly evaluate raw files as they would individually with C1. Adjustments made in Capture One are updated in Media Pro and the two utilities now provide metadata exchange including imaging description (rendering), and convey ownership and licensing information. This increased compatibility and support between these two distinct applications provides a much needed improvement in workflow for professional users.

Press release:

media_1305048021787.png

Phase One Media Pro is Released - the Photo Management App for Serious Photographers

Copenhagen, May 10, 2011 -- Phase One, the world’s leading pro photography equipment provider, today released Media Pro. Originally created by iView Multimedia, this professional digital asset management software has recently been known as Microsoft Expression Media. In its first release since Phase One’s acquisition of the product from Microsoft last year, it has been re-christened Media Pro.

Media Pro is a professional photo manager built for photographic, video and multimedia collection management. Media Pro offers a flexible and intuitive way to catalog, organize, and utilize digital media assets.

Its strength is in organizing photo files, no matter where they are stored -- on shared folders, CDs, hard drives, DVDs or other media. It’s an application comprising visual catalogs which can be easily and quickly browsed, searched, and annotated.

Images within these very large catalogs (Media Pro now supports more than 128,000 files per catalog) may be non-destructively edited with Capture One and other image editing applications. They may also be converted into other file formats. And all catalogs may be archived, backed up, published via slide shows, web galleries, and distributed via email, contact sheets, prints, and other custom options.

What’s new?

Seamless workflow with Capture One -- Phase One’s Capture One raw image rendering engine is built into the new Media Pro. Photographers can instantly magnify and evaluate raw images with correct colors, in detail, including adjustments. Images and adjustments made in Capture One are updated in Media Pro and the two applications offer integrated exchange of the metadata that describe images, and convey ownership and licensing information. This increased compatibility is a major improvement in the workflow between the two applications.

Openness
Media Pro offers exchange of metadata information by way of XMP, the extensible metadata platform. Media Pro also provides options to permit Windows-based systems to use Windows Imaging Components and Mac-based systems to use Core Image processing as their image rendering engines. This means that Media Pro maintains its independence as a best-of-breed digital asset management solution supporting other popular image editing software.

More camera support
Raw files from more than 100 new camera models are supported, including raw image and video support for Canon, Nikon and other popular pro and semi-pro digital cameras.

Larger Catalogs
The limitation of 128.000 files per catalog and the maximum size of 2GB per catalog has been removed to allow for larger photo collections. Users can still create an unlimited number of visual catalogs.

Updated User Interface
Media Pro comes with a redesigned user interface to match the sleek look of Capture One.
While this version continues to provide support for audio, DTP, font, text and HTML files, Media Pro is primarily a photo manager for photo and video files.
For more information about Media Pro, please see: www.phaseone.com/media-pro

“Working with Phase One to develop the new Media Pro tutorials has been very exciting, “said Peter Krogh, leading DAM expert and professional photographer. “I’ve long considered Media Pro to be one of my favorite DAM resources, and it’s clear that its future is bright.”

“Phase One is committed to investing in professional photo management and image editing software,” said Carsten H. Olsen, Phase One Software Product Manager. “This Media Pro release is designed to deliver a combined photography software toolset that will satisfy the world’s most demanding professional photographers.”

Capture One
Capture One is an image editing software that delivers the world’s highest image quality with excellent color and detail. The software comprises all the tools required to capture, organize, edit, share and print images for a highly efficient workflow.

Availability and Pricing
Media Pro is available now via download for USD 199 and EUR 139 through Phase One’s Online Store and through leading professional photography dealers worldwide.

Current Expression Media 2 customers can upgrade to Media Pro for USD 59 and EUR 39.
Current iView MediaPro/Expression Media 1 customers can upgrade to Media Pro for USD 69 and EUR 49.

media_1279208069769.png

Tokyo, New York, and Tel Aviv (PRWEB) July 14, 2010
Mamiya Digital Imaging today announced the first step in a global campaign to offer up-and-coming photographers creative freedom beyond their DSLR cameras. Following successful test marketing in the United States, Mamiya has announced that three of its popular medium format camera systems -- the Mamiya DM 22, DM28 and DM33 -- are now available worldwide at affordable prices.

Systems are based on a “Team Phase One” approach, which consists of technologies developed from Leaf, Mamiya and Phase One – companies that have decided to work together to offer the widest selection of choice to professional photographers. This approach achieves synergies in procurement, production, development, and service/support that help reduce costs and facilitate offering more affordable high quality digital camera solutions to customers.

The Mamiya DM 22 digital camera, for example, is available at a retail price as low as $9995/€6995. All systems feature the Mamiya 645DF camera body, proven digital back technology from Leaf Imaging, and Phase One Capture One software, the powerfully precise and flexible raw processing and image editing application. These camera systems are known for producing exceptional image quality, clarity and detail under many different conditions, and for offering a truly “eye-opening” shooting experience.
Mamiya customers also enjoy a wide range of lens choice -- more than 15 different lenses, including lightweight focal plane lenses and the new leaf shutter lenses designed in Germany by Schneider Kreuznach, which offer flash synchronization of up to 1/1,600 per second.

“We want to introduce the medium format ‘WOW’ sensation to more photographers, which is why we are offering equipment that’s affordable for up-and-coming pro shooters and passionate amateurs,” said Ziv Argov, marketing director for Mamiya. “Instead of purchasing a second DSLR, their new gear can introduce them to a new visual language that helps them realize an even more creative portfolio.”

“We offer proven, reliable technology, that’s designed and manufactured so that our customers are free to focus on capturing their visions,” said Mamiya president Toshio Midorikawa. “It’s not our cameras that take great pictures, it’s our customers who do."
“We are very enthused about the success of Mamiya DM systems in the United States,” said Jan Lederman, president of Mamiya America. “It is exciting that photographers worldwide now will have the opportunity to own such powerful digital camera systems at such affordable prices.”

Technical highlights include superior performance data, such as high resolution, richly detailed files up to 190MB 16bit TIFF per image. Each system features the largest medium format touch screen display (6x7cm) available for simple handling. The 645DF camera is designed to be the most reliable and durable medium format camera on the market.

Phase One A/S the medium format back maker and developer of the high quality Capture One raw software utility has unexpectedly acquired the Expression Media (PC, Mac) application from Microsoft Corp. Expression Media was formerly known and widely respected by imaging pros as iView Media Pro. Microsoft Corp added iView to its portfolio a number of years ago.

Read the full press release:

Phase One, a Digital Photography Leader, Acquires Microsoft’s Expression Media Product

Agreement focuses on strong customer support throughout transition.

REDMOND, Wash., and COPENHAGEN, Denmark — May 25, 2010 — Microsoft Corp. and Phase One A/S, a leader in digital photography, are announcing that Phase One acquired the Microsoft Expression Media product. This agreement is built on an existing strategic alliance between the companies forged in 2007 to improve digital imaging solutions for professional and enthusiast photographers.

Expression Media is a leading digital asset management application used to catalog and organize photos, video and music for effortless retrieval, presentation and sharing. Expression Media will join Phase One’s product lineup, which includes open-platform-based, medium- format camera systems able to render up to 60.5 megapixel resolution, and Capture One raw- conversion and image-editing software, which supports more than 170 different file formats and provides superior image quality with excellent color and detail. Phase One products are used by some of the world’s leading photographers.

“We’re excited about taking ownership of Expression Media,” said Henrik O. HÃ¥konsson, president and CEO, Phase One. “We have worked with Microsoft for several years, during which many of our customers have chosen Expression Media for their digital asset management needs. We are now planning product developments to help meet the growing needs of current and future customers. As an immediate benefit to existing Expression Media customers who may not yet have tried it, we are offering a free copy of Capture One to help enhance their photographic workflow.”

Under the terms of the agreement, Phase One takes full ownership of the Expression Media product. To ensure a smooth transition for Expression Media customers, Microsoft will continue to provide support to retail customers for 90 days. Phase One will begin offering support for the Expression Media product after the 90-day transition period. Microsoft customers who are currently using Expression Media under an Enterprise Agreement will continue to receive support from Microsoft through the term of their agreements. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Microsoft's sale of Expression Media to Phase One, within the context of the companies' relationship, is good news for the future of the product and for its customers,” said IDC analyst Ron Glaz. “Phase One's focus and expertise in the digital photography market make it well suited to drive product developments that will best serve the growing needs of imaging professionals.”

“Phase One is a respected and deeply committed leader in the digital photography market. With its strong experience in digital imaging software solutions, we’re thrilled that it will drive this technology forward,” said Josh Weisberg, director of Strategy and Business Development at Microsoft. “Through this agreement, we’ve made every effort to ensure that the integrity of the Expression Media technology remains intact and that our customers experience a seamless transition.”

The agreement was brokered by Microsoft’s IP Ventures program, a vehicle for Microsoft to get technologies into the hands of other businesses, spurring the economy and putting the best innovations in the hands of consumers. Microsoft will continue to develop the Expression Studio design tools for Silverlight and .Net.

Leaf Imaging enter new phase

Phase One, makers of medium-format digital backs, announced today the intention to purchase specific assets of rival back maker, Leaf , while forming a new company: Leaf Imaging Ltd.

Leaf Systems Inc of Massachusetts USA, was formed in 1984, but was subsequently acquired by Scitex in 1997 while operations moved to Tel Aviv. Shortly after, in 2000, Leaf changed ownership again when Creo Inc acquired Scitex. However that wasn't to last when Eastman Kodak acquired Creo Inc during 2005.

In the same week that Kodak announced the end of Kodachrome, the latest announcement sees the imaging giant shedding certain assets of Leaf, while entering into a intellectual property license with Phase One.

However as Kodak are the main, if not sole, manufacturer of image sensors for Phase One as well as Leaf, this acquisition was not entirely unexpected. As the number of rival digital camera back makers contract, Phase One are emerging as the dominant player in the medium format market.

Press release:

Leaf Imaging -- a new Phase One company

COPENHAGEN and TEL AVIV, June 25, 2009 -- Phase One A/S, in
conjunction with senior management employees of Leaf, today announced that they have created a new entity, Leaf Imaging Ltd., to purchase certain assets of the Leaf camera business. The assets include the “Leaf” brand product names, engineering design and production tools. The new entity will also enter into an intellectual property license with Eastman Kodak Company
that is royalty-bearing to Kodak. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In collaboration with Phase One, high end Leaf digital camera equipment will continue to be developed in Israel and marketed under the “Leaf” brand through a global network of specialized and dedicated value added resellers.

Leaf high quality digital camera backs with up to 56 Mega pixels and superior resolution and image quality can interface to all leading medium and large format cameras.

“We are committed to exciting future developments for the Leaf brand of products through innovative engineering, worldwide marketing and customer service, said Henrik O. HÃ¥konsson President and CEO, Phase One. “Leaf customers will benefit from the many synergies with Phase One.”

“Since introducing the world’s first digital camera back in 1992, Leaf has been recognized as a worldwide leader in the professional photography market. Our extensive digital imaging and color management knowledge, combined with Phase One’s software and hardware capabilities creates a unique opportunity for the world’s leading photographers,” said Dov Kalinski, General Manager, Leaf.

Phase One ready to launch 'ground breaking' product

Phase One are holding demonstration days on Thursday May 14th and Friday May 15th at Holborn Studios, London. Registration is required, for both days:

Friday May 15th

As well as having the new P65+ (60.5-megapixel) medium format back on show (see above), Phase One say they're set to launch a 'ground breaking product'. We'll let you know more details when we have them.

I'm also pleased to see from the company's April newsletter, Canadian photographer Walter Borchenko will be giving a presentation and guide through the new features of Capture One PRO v4.7.1 including the support for JPEG/TIFF files, the new proprietary .EIP format and working with multiple sessions.

We had the good fortune to meet Walter this year at Focus, and discovered we share the same exuberance for the Arca Swiss Cube (as well as C1 PRO of course).

I was sent a Cube by the UK distributor, but unfortunately there wasn't space to review it in the British Journal of Photography at that time. Perhaps we'll review it here, if we get the chance again. How about it Liz, if you're reading?

Capture One adds support for Jpeg & Tiff with version 4.7

Phase One, the digital back maker, has added support yesterday for Jpeg and Tiff files with the latest release of C1 V4.7. A new EIP file format has been added for Phase One backs, as has tethered shooting with the Canon EOS 5D MkII and Nikon D3x. Read the full press release for further information:

COPENHAGEN, April 2, 2009 -- Phase One’s Capture One version 4.7 introduces a new enhanced image package file format to make it easier to share adjusted Phase One digital back-generated RAW files. It also permits adjustment of both JPEG and TIFF files. And it adds tethered shooting support for Canon 5D Mark II and Nikon D3X.

New features include:

NEWLY-DESIGNED FILE FORMAT for Phase One RAW files
The Enhanced Image Package (.eip file extension) permits packaging of a Phase One RAW image file together with the adjustment settings applied to the RAW file, with no changes to the original RAW file or re-arrangement of settings.

Ideal for photographers working with retouchers or pre-press, the .eip file format makes it easier to share adjusted Phase One RAW files and helps simplify image archiving and management.

The concept is simple and based on well known, proven ZIP technology (but without the file compression). It is possible to capture directly to .eip or to convert existing files into .eip files. The .eip format leaves the original RAW file untouched, so it is always possible to ‘unpack’ the original RAW file and settings.

SUPPORT FOR JPEG and TIFF files as ‘Input’ Files
Many unique attributes of Capture One 4 have been available only for Phase One back users or DSLR shooters using RAW capture. With v4.7, JPEG and TIFF support has been added. All of the existing technology in Capture One 4 is activated for both JPEG and TIFF files with the exception of the Lens correction tools. Now, scans, or older archived files that are in TIFF or JPEG format can be added to existing work and adjusted using Phase One’s patented algorithms.

Note: For optimal image quality, it is still recommended to capture and work with images in RAW format.

ADDED TETHERED CAPTURE SUPPORT (PRO and DB versions)
o Canon 5D Mark II
o Nikon D3X

AVAILABILITY
Capture One 4.7 is available now and comes in three versions: 4.7, 4.7 PRO and 4.7 DB.
Capture One 4.7 is a free service release to existing Capture One 4.x owners. Capture
One 3.x customers can upgrade to a similar version of Capture One 4.6 at no extra cost.
