Pictures taken from the Kibo, the Japanese experimental module within the International Space Station (ISS), will then be posted on Olympus’ web sites and shown at photo exhibitions. Such amazing pictures of our blue planet are a testament to the value that Olympus places on the environment. Epson to resurrect R-D1 rangefinder with new R-D1x?

Epson Japan has announced the R-D1x, but while there are some improvements including a 2.5-inch LCD screen and compatibility with SD-HC, the maker has stayed with the 6.1MP resolution CCD of the original R-D1 and R-D1s.

As you can see from the photo above, there's an optional handgrip but what you can't see is that the fold-out and twisting screen of the orginal is now fixed in position.

According to the Epson Japan site, the new model will be available from the 09 April. No word as yet whether it will be available in Europe or the US.

Olympus E-620 at Focus on Imaging show

Olympus'  new 12.3-megapixel E-620, the update to the E-520, was on show at the maker's stand at Focus on Imaging in the UK, this week.

We'll have more opportunity to try it out next week at the official UK press launch, but for now our first impression is that it looks like the best of several models (E-420, E-510 and E-30) melded into one.  And that's certainly no bad thing.

Best of all is that Olympus has kept the grip small and unobtrusive, but how that affects handling over a period of time we'll just have to wait and see.

Nikon set to announce new D5000 DSLR?

There are plenty of rumors circulating the web about Nikon introducing a new entry-level DSLR in time for PMA 09 next week, tentatively called the D5000.

We've just had the Focus on Imaging show here in the UK, and while the D60 and D300 are likely to be replaced this year, there were no signs of an impending release.

All the same, Nikon usually introduce DSLRs at the beginning of the month, so there's still time.

Profoto intros D1 monolights

Stockholm, 5 February 2009 – Ask any professional photographer why they use Profoto strobes and the answers are identical: consistency, consistency and more consistency. And, oh yes, Profoto´s are the most durable and trouble free units on the market. So it’s not surprising that the company’s new D1 line of digital compact electronic flashes are the same. What makes them so consistent is the microprocessor controlled, dual mode SMPS capacitor charging system. Consistency is important for two reasons: precise exposure from flash to flash and precise colour temperature. These are important qualities for portrait and studio photographers who want an easy-to-pack, rugged, monolight design. The new Profoto D1 monolight system, available in 250, 500 or 1000 Ws versions, can be adjusted from full to 1/64th power in 1/10th stop intervals. This gives you a range of seven f/stops in precise, repeatable and consistent output.
The D1’s have other important qualities: quick recycling time (0.2–0.95 s), short flash duration (1/1000th– 1/2600th s), compact size (300x130 mm) and weight designed for portability (2.4 kg); this for the 500 Ws version. The head has the same size as other Profoto strobes, so the full line of light modifiers, such as beauty dishes, snoots or grids, can be used. There is a built-in fan cooling system, an audible affirmation (that can be turned off) and a photocell for triggering.
The D1’s come with a 300 W quartz-halogen proportional modeling light, which together with the flash tube are covered by a strong protective glass. The unit can be used with any worldwide voltage, from 90–130 and 200–240 V without having to change the modeling light. They are also available with the optional Profoto Air System, allowing remote triggering and control of output from as far as 300 m away. You can also use a PC or MAC to control lights in a multi-light setup.
For 40 years Profoto has set the standard in professional electronic flashes. The new D1 line is keeping with that reputation.

Olympus reveal 12.3-megapixel E-620 DSLR with free-angle LCD

European press release:

Hamburg, 24 February 2009 – The world’s smallest and lightest creative D-SLR with built-in image stabilisation has finally arrived! The new Olympus E-620 combines the technical sophistication required by pros with easy-to-use functions desired by hobbyists. As a result, ambitious photographers everywhere can now take creativity to a whole new level. Outfitted with a custom 7-point Twin autofocus system, the E-620 provides consistent focus, as well as a generous 12.3 Megapixel High-Speed Live MOS. Additionally, the Live View technology as well as the 6.9cm/2.7” free-angle HyperCrystal III LCD make framing every shot a cinch. In-camera Art Filters entice users to be artistic by allowing them to apply stylish effects at the touch of a button. Indeed, the E-620 is everything that makes Olympus Four Thirds Standard D-SLR cameras great. The latest addition to the E-System range offers creative and technological power – all rolled into one. The new model will be available for purchase at the end of April 2009 and retail between E520 and E-30 with exact pricing to be confirmed

A license for creativity
Designed to stimulate creativity, the E-620 brings out the artist in anyone. This D-SLR comes packed with features that will give a different look to the shot that’s being captured, all without the need for a computer or special software. Effects can even be viewed in real time. Familiar from the
E-30, the Art Filters enable a selection from one of six exciting themes. With this function, photos can for example be given striking colours in order to create a more intense, joyful feel by applying the Pop Art filter. This confers images a completely new artistic flair. Other fantastic effects include Pin Hole, Soft Focus, Pale & Light Colour, Light Tone and Grainy Film. On top of that, there’s the option to utilise the Live View display to overlay two stored RAW images in order to create amazing new Multi Exposure masterpieces, all in real time. Plus, users can always frame their shot in a way that suits their fancy. All they have to do is choose between five different aspect ratios – from 4:3 (standard) to 6:6 (medium-format) to 16:9 (cinematic) – and the picture is theirs.

The E-620’s elegant body promotes creativity as much as the state-of-the-art technology packed inside. Guaranteeing pictures are a success no matter what the conditions or how far the subject is, a built-in image stabilisation corrects camera shake up to four steps, assuring steadiness and making tripods unnecessary in most instances. Then there’s the free-angle 6.9cm/2.7” HyperCrystal III LCD with 176° viewing angle, which means shots can be taken from almost any perspective. This way, you can even capture a field of daisies from a bee’s point of view! Working in terrific harmony with the camera’s contrast AF* capabilities, the Live View functionality allows you to comfortably judge results even before they are shot: what you see is what you get. Perfect light is a guarantee with the ability to use up to three separate, camera controlled, Wireless Flash groups – an option first introduced with the E-3. And with the attachable HLD-5 Power Grip, taking vertical photos becomes a breeze while the extra battery performance enables shooting for longer hours. With such an impressive array of functions, the potential of the E-620 can be stretched as far as the photographer’s imagination.

A camera with the works
A camera that inspires creativity needs to be extraordinarily functional as well, and the E-620 doesn’t disappoint. One of the D-SLR’s most exciting facets is the new 7-point Twin AF which features seven distance-measuring points, five of which are cross-points. This Olympus autofocus technology was developed for the professional E-3 after the comprehensive analysis of thousands of photographs and interviews with professional photographers. It has now been tailored to hobbyist needs: the five cross-points work by using horizontal and vertical sensor lines to supply data that determines the ideal focal points of each shot. This ensures every snap of the shutter produces blur-free results. In addition, the AF was specifically designed to work easily and rapidly with SWD lenses. With the E-620, being out of focus becomes a thing of the past.

Aside from the amazing AF, the E-620 also packs the one-two punch of a 12.3 Megapixel high-speed Live MOS sensor and the latest-generation TruePic III+ processor so that every picture is as clear as the real thing – even when shot at a blazing fast 4fps. If users aren’t taking advantage of the LCD to do their framing, they can employ the exceptional viewfinder which magnifies up to 0.96x and provides 95% viewing coverage. An Auto White Balance also helps reproduce vivid and true to life colours.

Goes where you go, does what you want it to do
One of the advantages of Four Thirds technology is perfectly incorporated into the E-620: it is so compact and light that it can be taken anywhere. And thanks to a design that provides a handy ergonomic grip, this model always feels comfortable to hold. It’s also equipped with Olympus’ exclusive Supersonic Wave Filter dust protection system – the most effective dust protection system on the market. In addition, the camera’s buttons illuminate to provide valuable aid when shooting at night.

The Olympus E-620 can be enjoyed with nearly all E-System accessories, such as 33 lenses and different flash systems. New robust Olympus Flash Brackets, like the FL-BK04, ensure maximum flexibility and good light in any situation where a flash may be needed. And two flashes are also not a problem with the practical FL-BKM03 Flash Bracket, on which any standard flash or the twin flash set STF-22 can be mounted. As for those who like to take a dive, Olympus’ new PT-E06 Underwater Case has you covered to depths of up to 40m.

Boasting all of Olympus’ technological knowhow, this camera delivers everything creative types want in a digital SLR. It offers the ultimate in E-System features such as the Supersonic Wave Filter and Live View as well as artistic options like Art Filters in one innovative package. Look for the new E-620 in stores as of the end of April 2009 at a retail price of €TBC.

Samsung surprise with world's first AMOLED screen on WB100 and high-end WB550

13:00 (GMT) 23rd February 2009 – Samsung Digital Imaging, leaders in innovation and digital technology, is breaking new ground by including world-first technology in the advanced WB550 and WB100 compact cameras.

The WB100 model, with a 5x optical zoom and 24mm ultra wide lens, breaks ground in the compact camera category by featuring the world's first 3.0” VGA AMOLED screen. The organic LED screen out performs conventional TFT LCD screens with better contrast and a brighter screen that really helps when shooting in both bright sunlight and dark conditions. The 960k pixel packed screen also shows fantastic detail when framing the shot and in playback.

The new WB550 also includes a world first 10x optical zoom and 24mm ultra wide angle Schneider lens (previously found only in the camera’s predecessor, the WB500*) and cements Samsung’s position as an innovator in the new and important High-zoom category - compact cameras equipped with the sort of advanced zoom lens technology traditionally seen only in SLR cameras. This new technology gives people even greater control and helps them take better, professional standard photos; enhancing the entire photography experience, from shooting to sharing images with friends and family.

HD Movie Experience
The 12 mega pixel WB550 and WB100 also include HD movie capture so people can ‘Pause and Re-record’ high definition videos and super sharp movie-quality recordings in one movie clip - a Samsung patented function. The cameras also include ‘Smart Auto’ (Scene Recognition) technology: 11 optimized picture pre-settings such as Portrait, Night portrait, Macro and Macro Colour, to help people take the perfect shot regardless of the conditions.

Dual Image Stabilisation
The WB550 and WB100 integrate Optical and Digital Image Stabilisation into a Dual Image Stabilisation function, providing outstanding quality photos without blur from handshake - even in low light conditions.

Full Manual Control
For the more advanced user who prefers to have more control over camera settings, the WB100 offers aperture priority, shutter priority, as well as full manual shooting modes. Samsung also includes its unique Advanced Picture Mode in the WB100. With Advanced Picture Mode, users can fine tune color tones in their saved images by adjusting the color temperature from 2,800-10,000K, in 100K increments, or by manually configuring the camera’s color space shift.

Face Detection
Samsung’s Perfect Portrait System is included within both the ultra-compact cameras alongside a host of other advanced features; “Face Detection” locates the subject’s face within the frame and automatically adjusts auto focus and auto exposure to ensure better composition and image quality for portraits; in “Blink Detection Mode” the cameras take a series of shots when closed eyes are detected so friends and family are always captured with their eyes open; in “Smile Mode” a picture is automatically taken when smiles are detected and, in "Beauty Shot" mode, facial skin is retouched for a brighter and smoother skin tone.

Frame Guide
The Frame Guide setting on the new WB550 and WB100 means you no longer need rely on the technological capabilities of strangers for perfect holiday snaps. When you use the setting, the camera take a ghost picture of your desired shot and displays a template when you pass the camera over to someone else - ensuring they take the picture you want them to take, with you perfectly placed in it.

Smart Album
The two advanced compact cameras also feature a new ‘Smart Album’ Digital Contents Management system; a contents management program within the camera that makes it quick and easy to store and manage your photo collection. The clever navigation program automatically organizes photos based on the date they were taken, their contents, colour or themes.

"Samsung is really strengthening our High Zoom and advanced compact range with the launch of the WB550 and WB100, providing world-first technology, unique and innovative features and advanced solutions for photographers of all levels" said Steve Mitchell, General Manager Marketing, Samsung Digital Imaging Division.

The WB550, available in Black and Dark Grey, is priced at £299 (TBC) and will be available from leading high street and online retailers from April 2009.

The WB100, available in Black and Silver is priced at £329 (TBC) and will be available from leading high street and online retailers from April 2009. All Samsung Cameras include a two year warranty. Customers requiring further information should call 0845 726 7864 or visit www.samsungcamera.co.uk

UPDATE 20 July, 2009 - A lot confusion surrounds the wording of this press release but, after speaking with Samsung's PR, the WB550 doesn't replace the WB500, but complements it in the range. Note, the WB100 is also known as the TL320 in the US.

Cosina unwrap new Voigtlander 20mm f/3.5 Color Skopar SL II Aspherical for Nikon and Pentax DSLRs

Cosina have lifted the wraps on the Voigtlander Color Skopar 20mm f/3.5 SL-II Aspherical for Nikon FX (full-frame) and DX (APS-C) format DSLRs. A version with the KA mount for Pentax DSLRs has also been announced. Like others in the range, it's a manual focus lens but has a built-in CPU for metering control with the latest DSLRs.

We have the following lens specification, but no word as yet on price or availability:

Lens Construction :6 groups 9 elements
Smallest Aperture : F22
Picture Angle :94°
Aperture Blades : 9
Nearest Distance : 0.2m
Diameter x Length :φ63mm x 28.8mm
Weight :205 g
Mount : Ai-S / KA

All this looks promising, and reminds me of the the long-discontinued Nikkor 20mm f/3.5 Ai lens from the late 70's and early 80's. Can't help but think this would be an excellent choice on the D700, but as the equivalent to a 35mm f/3.5 on the Pentax K20D it doesn't feel quite as compelling, in my view. Lets hope Pentax (Hoya) comes up with a full-frame model before too long - it has to be on the cards, recession or not, right?

For more information from the UK distributor, Robert White, visit their site.

For US visitors, the retailer B&H carry an extensive range of Voigtlander - to order the item or check the price, click here.

New polarizer filters from Canon

Along with the new TS-E lenses announced this week, Canon also revealed in the body of the press release, that they have updated their range of circular (hence "C") polarizer filters.

Extracted from the press release on Wednesday:

Canon today has also introduced a new range (52mm to 72mm) of versatile, multi-functional PL-C B polarizing filters to help reduce reflections from glass or water or darken blue skies. The PL-C B’s, which are now available in 52mm, 58mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm and 82mm filter thread sizes, also allows the lens cap to be attached to the lens to prevent damage to the filter if left attached when not in use.

Quite how they differ from the previous range, which we use here, other than being able to retain a lens cap isn't mentioned. Perhaps that's the only difference. I will ask them for clarification tomorrow at the Focus on Imaging trade show.

There also appears to be a typo in the press release, but we assume they mean the new range covers filter threads from 52mm to 82mm.

UPDATE 2/24:

Canon has confirmed there is no optical difference between the new PL-C B polarizer filters and the earlier offerings and kindly supplied us with a compatibility chart. For details please see below:

Leica announces Super-Elmar 18mm f/3.8 ASPH for M system Rangefinders

From the UK Press release:

NEW LENS AND VIEWFINDER INTRODUCED FOR M SYSTEM
LEICA SUPER-ELMAR-M 18 mm f/ 3.8 ASPH.
AND LEICA BRIGHT LINE FINDER M for 18 mm lenses

Leica, the lens specialist, is pleased to introduce new accessories for the M system; the LEICA SUPER-ELMAR-M 18 mm f/ 3.8 ASPH. lens and the LEICA BRIGHT LINE FINDER compatible for both M digital and films models. The LEICA SUPER-ELMAR-M 18 mm f/ 3.8 ASPH. is a compact wide-angle lens, expanding the range of short focal-length lenses for the Leica M System and offering outstanding image quality. The new finder, the LEICA BRIGHT LINE FINDER M 18 mm, matches the new lens and is the latest addition to the Leica rangefinder system accessories range. LEICA SUPER-ELMAR-M 18 mm f/ 3.8 ASPH.

The latest lens from Leica is ideal for a wide range of applications – from expansive reportage images to landscapes and architectural photography. When used with Leica’s digital M models, the LEICA M8 and M8.2, the smaller sensor format increases the effective focal length to the 35 mm format equivalent of 24 mm. Making the new lens a perfect choice for wide-angle lens for digital M photography. In addition, the lens can also be used on all analogue Leica M camera models and its extremely short focal length of 18 mm opens up numerous new opportunities for composition and creative expression.

The fundamental parameters of vignetting and distortion traditionally encountered in superwide-angle lenses have been so well corrected for the LEICA SUPER-ELMAR-M18mm f/ 3.8 ASPH that they play no role at all in practice. This results in extremely sharp,crystal-clear and uniformly exposed images from corner to corner. Due to the outstanding contrast and reproduction of details, the initial aperture of f/3.8 can be used without any limitations. Even wide open, the depth of field extends from infinity to 1.2 metres. Available at authorised Leica dealers from March 2009 at SRP of £1955

LEICA BRIGHT LINE FINDER M 18 mm

A matching LEICA BRIGHT LINE FINDER M 18 mm is also available for the new LEICA SUPERELMAR- M 18 mm f/ 3.8 ASPH. Used in conjunction with the new lens, it shows the precise framing of the field of view, and is distinguished by its vibrant, high-contrast image. Due to a concave mirror in the optics (hence the term ‘mirror viewfinder’), part of the incoming light is used to brightly illuminate the frame for the field of view – in the same way as in the viewfinder of Leica M cameras.

The finder has parallax compensation markings for close-up distances below 2m, and also markings for the slightly smaller image field of LEICA M8 models. It is, therefore, equally suitable for both film (24 x 36 mm) and for digital photography (18 x 27 mm). The entire optical system of the finder has a high-quality multi-layer coating to guarantee optimum viewing under all conditions.

What’s more, as you would expect from Leica, the latest technology has been fused with classic design. The high-quality solid brass metal body has been finished with the popular, retro look of its predecessors of the fifties and sixties and is available in either silver-chrome or black paint to match the cameras.

Available at authorised Leica dealers from March 2009 in chrome or black at SRP of £550

With the new image processing engine Smooth Imagine Engine IV and a new high-speed image processing CMOS sensor installed, the CX1 achieves greater image quality while at the same time expanding dynamic range with its Dynamic Range Double Shot Mode that shoots two still images with different exposures, and then records an image that combines the properly exposed portions of each image. With the new enhanced continuous shooting function, the CX1 shoots at 120 images (120 frames/sec.)

In addition, functions such as Multi-Pattern Auto White Balance (sets white balance based on the light sources of segregated areas of the image) and Multi-Target AF (shoots consecutive images at seven focal distances automatically defined by the camera) enable the new CX1 to create beautiful images giving an almost naked-eye impression.

This is a digital camera that takes the design concept "A tool you will want to use every day" to a new level of perfection.

New Features:

1. Enhanced high-speed continuous shooting functions - Don't miss the decisive moment.

o Smooth continuous shooting*. High-speed continuous shooting at approx. 4 frames/sec
*Continuous shooting speed will vary depending on shooting conditions, card type, card condition, etc.

o Continuous shooting at overwhelming speed. 120 frame/sec. Ultra-high-speed continuous shooting. With ultra-high-speed continuous shooting, the CX1 shoots 120 images (120 frames/sec.) during an interval of about one second after the shutter release button is pushed, or 120 images (60 frames/sec.) during an interval of about two seconds.

*Image size is fixed at N640 (VGA).
*The consecutively shot images are recorded as a single MP file (a file format with multiple still images in a single file).

o Don't miss your target. M continuous shooting plus. The M-continuous plus shooting function does continuous shooting that saves the 30 images (30 frames/sec.) taken during the one second or so before the finger is removed from the shutter release button or the 30 images (15 frames/sec.) taken during the two seconds before. By taking your finger from the shutter release just after the decisive moment has passed, you can be sure that you have caught the exact image.

*Image size is fixed at N1728 (2M).
*The consecutively shot images are recorded as a single MP file (a file format with multiple still images in a single file).

2. Dynamic Range Double Shot Mode - Decisive reduction of overexposure/underexposure.

It can be difficult to photograph scenes in which the level of brightness varies greatly. With dynamic range double shot mode, the CX1 shoots, consecutively at high speed, two still images with different exposures, and then it records an image that combines the properly exposed portions of each. Expanding the dynamic range up to a maximum equivalent to 12 EV makes it possible to record images that give an almost naked-eye impression. You can select the expansion effect from 4 types, Very Weak, Weak, Medium and Strong on the menu.

3. Multi-Pattern Auto White Balance - A dramatic transformation for people photography.

For scenes with both sunlight and shadow and scenes mixing flash and natural light (or fluorescent light, etc.) during flash photography, this function can define white balance to fit the light source of each segregated area of the image. This new capability is very powerful for people photography in scenes which could not be adequately handled by past auto white balance functions, which used an average setting for the entire image.
The new image processing engine (SIE IV) has a specialized circuit that analyzes the image broken down into 32x27 areas. The white balance correction factor is defined for the light source of each area. This makes it possible to do white balancing correction for multiple light sources.

4. Multi-Target Auto Focus - Shoot seven images with different focal distances.

Multi-target AF does high-speed consecutive shooting of seven images with different focal distances determined by the camera. It is effective for scenes (such as flowers) where there is a narrow range for a sharp focus. The camera automatically decides the seven focus points and does the high-speed consecutive shooting of seven images while shifting the focus to each point. After shooting, you can select the image with the preferred focus.

5. Smooth Imaging Engine IVÃ…{CMOS sensor - superb image quality.

The CX1 features the highly evolved image processing engine Smooth Imaging Engine IV together with a CMOS sensor that enables high-speed image processing. For maximum enhancement of image beauty, the CX1 has the imaging power to brilliantly isolate one instant in time, and for high-sensitivity shooting it achieves sharp resolution and noise reduction without compromising colour reproduction.

6. Pixel output interpolation algorithm

The addition of a customized circuit to the image processing engine has made it possible to include a pixel output interpolation algorithm that minimizes whiteout in high-contrast situations, thereby enabling you to faithfully capture the excitement seen by your eyes. With techniques that use R (red) and B (blue) information to interpolate G (green) information (which is prone to saturation), the CX1 expands dynamic range by up to +1 EV over previous method.
