Transcend rolls out shock-resistant USB 3.0 hard drive

media_1312972424805.png

Traveling with a laptop can be tough on gear so the new portable and shock-resistant StoreJet 25A hard drive from Transcend looks like an attractive proposition. Prices for the USB 3.0 drive start at $123 for 500GB. Although the 25A3 version uses USB 3.0 (Mac users won't benefit from the increase in transfer rates, though the device will still be supported), a cheaper 25A2 option adopts USB2.0.

Press release:

Transcend Information, Inc. (Transcend), a worldwide leader in storage and multimedia products, today released a new addition to its StoreJet line of portable hard drives, the StoreJet 25A. This new drive boasts an attractively slender yet shock-resistant design, and is available in both SuperSpeed USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 versions. Featuring strikingly fast data transfer speeds, powerful software tools and up to a full terabyte of storage capacity, the StoreJet 25A is ideal for everyday backup, storage, and transport.

Next Generation SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Interface
The StoreJet 25A3 portable hard drive is equipped with a next-generation SuperSpeed USB 3.0 connection interface that provides 10 times the bandwidth of USB 2.0. Thanks to the improved connection speed of USB 3.0, the StoreJet 25A3 delivers real-world transfer speeds of up to 90MB/s – fast enough to transfer a full DVD in just 50 seconds. If ultimate transfer speed is not absolutely essential, the StoreJet 25A2 USB 2.0 version of the drive offers the same eye-catching design and features at an attractive price.

Slim and Compact, yet Durable and Shock Resistant
Although slender and lightweight in design, the StoreJet 25A offers robust durability, with thorough defense against data loss resulting from accidental shock or collision. The slimmest drive to incorporate Transcend’s exclusive shock-absorbing suspension damper system, the StoreJet 25A effectively protects its internal hard drive by softening the force of impact in case of accidental slips or falls.

Powerful Software with One Touch Backup Convenience
Much more than just a place to store files, the StoreJet 25A can also function as an advanced data backup station, with a convenient One Touch Auto-Backup button for swift, effortless data backup and synchronization when used with the bundled Transcend Elite software. Aside from its comprehensive backup features, Transcend Elite also offers robust encryption security and time-saving mobile internet bookmarks. Additionally, the StoreJet 25A includes Transcend’s own RecoveRx™ software – an extraordinarily effective tool for bringing back accidentally deleted or lost files.
The USB 3.0 StoreJet 25A3 is currently available in three capacities: 500GB (US$123 MSRP); $750GB ($147 MSRP); 1TB ($194 MSRP), and the USB 2.0 StoreJet 25A2 is also available in 500GB (US$114 MSRP); 750GB (US$138 MSRP); and 1TB (US$182 MSRP) capacities. All models are backed by Transcend’s three-year limited warranty.

New HP paper raises the bar in home photo printing

media_1312837684000.png

A few weeks back, I attended a group workshop with one of HP’s ink gurus, Thom Brown (find him on twitter under @ThomAtHP), where we discussed the mirco-technology which goes into producing quality inks and paper – take a look at the ‘Inkology’ video on the home page of this site to learn more yourself.

The science and technology behind ink is truly astounding; for example, did you know that each droplet hitting the paper (fired from the inkjet nozzle as a superheated vapour, rather than liquid – it condenses on impact with air), is the equivalent of dropping a grape from a 30th floor window into a paper cup on the pavement outside? Not only that, but factoring in the movement of the print head and paper, the pavement would effectively be moving at the time...!

It’s not just the ink that matters though, choose the wrong paper to print photos on, and you’ll see poor results – the quality truly is as good as a weakest link. Buy cheap paper, you’ll get cheap looking results.

Adding to the existing range of quality photo papers, HP has just introduced its new HP Premium Plus Photo Paper, which has a porous coating technology, giving supreme water resistance, improved fade-resistance, and compatibility benefits – all of which will thus deliver professional quality photos at home.

To enhance the ‘photo feel’ and durability of print-outs, new HP Premium Plus Photo Paper is thicker and heavier than previous models, at 300 g/m2. This new photo paper also gives higher definition of colour contrast, thanks to the improved whiteness CIE.

Press release:

media_1317897520650.png

HP has introduced its new HP Premium Plus Photo Paper with porous coating technology that offers professional quality prints, improved water resistance and universal compatibility benefits.

The paper is designed with a porous coating technology. In contrast to swellable coatings, which behave like a sponge when they get wet and can take some time to dry, the porous coating technology behaves like a pumice stone, pulling ink into the pores in the paper layer. This delivers the same great quality photo and fade protection provided by swellable coatings, and also delivers instant dry, water resistance and universal compatibility benefits.

The new HP Premium Plus Photo Paper will offer generations of fade resistance which rivals or exceeds competitors, including most lab-processed photos. You can find out more here www.hp.com/go/printpermanence.

To enhance the ‘photo feel’ and durability of print-outs, new HP Premium Plus Photo Paper is thicker and heavier than previous models, at 300 g/m2. This new photo paper also gives higher definition of colour contrast, thanks to the whiteness CIE which has been improved from 93 to 100 in the new HP Premium Plus Photo Paper.

Designed with the environment in mind, all HP photo papers are recyclable and responsibly sourced from well managed forests. HP Premium Plus Photo Paper is easily recyclable alongside usual household waste and can be recycled in collection systems that accept drink cartons. New HP Photo Premium Plus and all other HP porous photo papers (Advanced and Everyday Photo Paper) are made from fibres certified to Forest Stewardship Council standards (FSC® C017543) that are responsibly sourced from well managed forests

Ricoh announce GXR Mount A12 for Leica M lenses

media_1312547534737.png

Ricoh has formerly announced the GXR Mount A12 (it was previously shown in Japan at the CIPA+ show earlier in the year). The Mount a12 allows the fitment of Leica M lenses and features a 12-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor. The Mount A12 fits the standard GXR body and allows interchangeable lens/sensor modules (what Ricoh strangely call camera modules). The new Mount A12 features Red/Blue color shading correction (a common issue with rangefinder lenses as they sit close to the sensor) and has peripheral illumination correction. This maybe an alternative to anyone thinking of buying a secondhand Leica M8, though it's not likely to be cheap.

More information about the GXR can be at www.ricoh.com.

Press release:

Ricoh announces GXR MOUNT A12
A GXR lens mount unit featuring an APS-C size CMOS sensor

Tokyo, Japan, August 5, 2011—Ricoh Co., Ltd. (president and CEO: Shiro Kondo) today announced the development and planned September 9, 2011 release of the new product GXR MOUNT A12, a lens mount unit exclusively for the GXR interchangeable unit camera system. The body colour will be black only, and the planned monthly production volume is 3,000 units.

Introduced in December 2009, the GXR is a revolutionary interchangeable unit camera system in which lenses can be changed by mounting camera units that integrate lens, image sensor, and image processing engine into a single unit. In addition, utilizing its unique ability to accommodate interchangeable units other than camera units, the system can be expanded to include a variety of other devices.

The new GXR MOUNT A12 is a lens mount unit made especially for the GXR. Featuring an APS-C size CMOS sensor and a newly developed focal plane shutter, this unit makes it possible to mount lenses such as Leica M lenses, and it provides various types of compensation and correction functions.

Main features of GXR MOUNT A12

1.    The newly adopted APS-C size CMOS sensor expands possibilities for high resolution and imaging power.
The adoption of a CMOS sensor with an optimized micro lens layout makes it possible to secure sufficient brightness levels even in the peripheral areas of the image.
The CMOS sensor used is 23.6mm × 15.7mm (APS-C size). It enables the shooting of high-quality images with smooth tone gradations as well as high definition and low noise.

2.Compatibility with a wide variety of lenses, including Leica M mount lenses.
Compatible with the Leica M mount, GXR MOUNT A12 can, of course, handle M-mount lenses, and if a conversion adapter is used many more types of mounts can also be accommodated.
A checking device is included for use in confirming whether or not your lenses are physically compatible.

3.Diverse new functions maximize the potential of the lens itself
In order to accommodate the photographer’s own preferences by adjusting for the distinctive characteristics of many different lenses, GXR MOUNT A12 can independently correct colouring at the corners. Colour shading correction is possible in a -4 to +4 range for both R and B.

Peripheral illumination correction is possible in a -3 to +3 range.
A distortion correction function is provided to correct for the distortion that tends to occur in the lens periphery. The photographer can select barrel and pincushion distortion and specify “strong,” “medium,” or “weak” for each.
A glass optical filter was adopted and made as thin as possible. It increases periphery image quality and suppresses field curvature.

4.High-precision focusing
A focus-assist function has been included in an effort to raise the accuracy of manual focusing. The photographer can select from two modes and check the focus by strengthening outlines and contrast.
Magnifying the screen image while shooting is an effective technique for focusing. The magnification can be done not only in the center but throughout the image. In addition, the image quality for 4x and 8x magnification has been further enhanced. The area to be magnified can be moved using the directional pad.

5.Two shutter methods are featured: newly developed focal plane shutter and electronic shutter
・With the focal plane shutter, settings of 1/4000 sec. to 180 sec. are possible.
With the electronic shutter, settings of 1/8000 sec. to 1 sec. are possible, and the photographer can shoot without worrying about shutter noise and vibration.

6.The wide range of functionality that characterizes the GXR series
My Settings enables a wide range of shooting functions to be specified in an instant. For the setting information storage, six patterns can now be stored in the body’s My Settings Box and six patterns can be stored in the SD card. This, along with the ability to change shooting conditions, further expands the photographer’s world of photo expression.
In manual exposure mode, the shutter speeds B (bulb) and T (time) can be selected. With B, the exposure continues while the shutter release button is pressed, and with T, the shutter release button is pressed to start and end the exposure. For both B and T, the exposure is automatically ended when 180 seconds have elapsed.
Information on the lens used can be put in the EXIF information. In the editing of My Settings information, lens name, focal length, and F value can be entered.
New scene mode options have been added for the easy enjoyment of a wide range of photo expression. The five new options are soft focus, cross process, toy camera, miniaturize, and high contrast B&W. The photographer can create a unique image by just pressing the shutter release button.
An electronic level utilizing an acceleration sensor.
An image flag function to enable the quick display of specific images from among those in the camera. Up to 20 images can be flagged.
For the exterior, we utilized die cast magnesium, which has a strong track record in the GR series, and we covered the surface with a corrosion-resistant "pear-skin" coating. The end result is a body with durability, light weight, and a superior feel in hand.
It is possible to shoot 1280 × 720 pixel HD movies.
* Note: When shooting movies of 1280×720 size, the use of an SD/SDHC memory card with an SD speed class of Class 6 or higher is recommended.

7.New options added
We have created the new soft cases SC-75B and SC-75T, which are easy to open and close. With SC-75B, it is possible to shoot with the case attached to the GXR body.

GR MOUNT A12 options

Product                    Model
Soft Case B lower portion and strap    SC-75B
Soft Case T upper portion only        SC-75T

*All of the focal lengths in this release are converted to the equivalent values for a 35 mm film camera.
*SC-75T cannot be used as a case by itself. It must be used together with SC-75B.
*SC-75B and SC-75T are new options being introduced at this time.
*Functions when the GXR body is attached.

JP To Distribute Micromuff

JP Distribution is pleased to announce the latest addition to our growing portfolio.

Designed by filmmaker and designer Will Hutchinson, Micromuff is an accessory which improves the sound quality of exterior video recordings. Compatible with most video capable DSLR's, the Micromuff attaches directly to the camera body, to dramatically reduce the effect of wind noise.

"Even the tiniest amount of breeze is capable of destroying a sound recording with distortion and audio clipping". says Will. "This affordable little accessory works incredibly well at solving the problem".

Developed and manufactured in the UK, the Micromuff is made using high quality acoustic fur, and a unique cutting process, which retains the full length of fur-pile edge to edge. It attaches to the camera using die-cut Velcro rings, for easy attachment and removal.

"Whilst at first glance it may look like a novelty", says Will, "it is an effective and dependable solution and a serious bit of kit, perfect for outdoor filming of any kind - walking, bird watching, sports, the beach, weddings."

Whether you are professional or amateur, a keen enthusiast or hobbyist, low-budget film maker or occasional video dabbler, Micromuff is an indispensable gadget that you'll want to keep in your kit bag permanently.

Olympus announce VF-3 for Pen series

media_1311755449813.png

Olympus has announced today the VF-3 electronic viewfinder for the popular Micro Four Thirds Pen series. Although I've not seen it I have an E-P3 on my desk with the VF-2 attached and the new finder looks to have a lower (smaller) profile. As can be seen from the images below, there's a large diopter control, but a new feature is the addition of a hotshoe lock to prevent inadvertent detachment. There's no word on resolution, but it will retail for $236 (as a rate conversion) / £179.99 / 204 Euros inc VAT from mid-August.

I will be sharing my techniques with participants to give them the tools that will help them make their picture special long after the workshop has ended.”

Miss Aniela said, "I will be showing my entire process from shooting to RAW workflow and retouching, which can be anything from simple adjustments to intricate compositing. I’ll be applying post-production techniques to create surreal and arresting imagery as seen in my self-portraiture, but also showing the importance of the thinking process behind it.”

And Kevin Raber, host of the PODAS workshop series and vice president of Phase One USA said, “I am thrilled to be organizing this workshop at such a spectacular location and with such talented instructors.”

Previous PODAS workshops have generally focused on landscape photography instruction and have been held in locations such as Australia, Death Valley, Iceland and Ireland. Future workshops are now being designed and will be announced.

AP photographer Matt Dunham wins first prize in the royalty and entertainment section of the Press Photographer's Year 2011

Associated Press (AP) photographer Matt Dunham has won the first prize in the royalty and entertainment section of the Press Photographer’s Year Award 2011 for his impromptu image of HRH Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall when their car was attacked and damaged by demonstrators in the heart of London late last year. Dunham’s winning photo is currently on display in an exhibition at the National Theatre, London. The exhibition is free to visitors.

Press release:

Famous Charles and Camilla picture earns Associated Press photographer a Press Photographer’s Year for 2011 prize

LONDON - Associated Press (AP) photographer Matt Dunham has won first prize in the royalty and entertainment section of the Press Photographer’s Year Award for his famous Charles and Camilla picture, taken as the royal couple got caught up in demonstrations on their way to the theatre in central London. HRH Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall’s car was surrounded by crowds as police clashed with demonstrators last December. At the time, protests were at a high against coalition government cuts and controversial plans to triple university tuition fees in England.

AP Regional Photo Editor for Europe and Africa Tony Hicks said: “Matt Dunham is one of the outstanding press photographers of his generation. This award-winning image is testament to his news judgment and versatility. After filing photos of demonstrations in Parliament Square, Matt decided to follow a group of people he believed were intent on causing trouble. Seeing the group crowd around a large vehicle, in which he realised the royal couple was traveling, he had seconds to fire off five frames. AP used all of the images. This is an example of how following instincts in reporting can pay dividends.”

Out of nearly 8,000 entries, Dunham’s photo was one of 15 pictures selected for the Press Photographer’s Year Award. Some 136 images are being showcased in an exhibition at the National Theatre from Monday, 18 July to Sunday, 4 September.

The website of the Associated Press can be found here. Details of the exhibition at the National Theatre, can be found here.

Leica has announced three adapters for the S2 medium format camera allowing the fitment of Hasselblad V (Carl Zeiss), Mamiya 645 and Pentax 67 lenses. The adapters will be available from August at a price of £525 inc VAT.

The introduction of lens adapters should help prevent detractors pointing out the lack of Leica S lenses for the S2. Although more are planned there are only four in the range at this time: 35/2.5, 70/2.5, 120/2.5 Macro and a 180/3.5.

Press release:

Leica Camera AG expands lens compatibility for Leica S-System

Leica S-Adapters increase flexibility of S2, enabling use of other manufacturers’ medium-format lenses

15 July 2011:  Leica is expanding its range of accessories for the Leica S2 professional camera system. From August 2011, three new Leica S-Adapters will be available, allowing photographers to attach medium-format lenses from other manufacturers to Leica S bodies. The Leica S-Adapter V can be used for Hasselblad V System lenses, the Leica S-Adapter P67 for the Pentax 67 system lenses and the Leica S-Adapter M645 for the lenses of the Mamiya 645 system.

The S-Adapters offer many benefits to professional photographers. As a result of being able to use third-party lenses on the Leica S2, photographers now have access to a wider selection of additional lenses, further increasing the S-System’s flexibility. Furthermore, photographers who already own lenses from the aforementioned systems can now use them on the Leica S2. This extension of the compatible lens range includes tilt and shift. As with all products in the Leica S portfolio, the Leica S-Adapters are manufactured to extremely high specifications. The use of high quality materials in their construction – anodised aluminium and chrome-plated brass – makes them durable and reliable, even when in constant use.

With a resolution of 37.5 megapixels, the S2’s 30 x 45mm CCD sensor features an aspect ratio of 3:2 and an area nearly 60% larger than that of a traditional 35mm camera, resulting in stunning image quality. The S2’s full range of features includes autofocus, high-speed MAESTRO image processor, highly durable design and optimal size and ease-of-use for professional photographers.

Pricing and availability in the UK

The Leica S-Adapters are scheduled to be available in the UK from August 2011 from selected authorised Leica dealers including the Leica Store Mayfair: www.leica-storemayfair.co.uk, tel: 020 7629 1351. Pentax announce special edition 645D

media_1310632396319.png

Pentax has announced the availability of a specially lacquered version of the 645D to celebrate being named “Camera GP Japan 2011 Camera of The Year”.

The hand-crafted lacquer or urushi finish involves pasting many different types of silver leaves on a black-lacquer base and applying an overcoat of paint in a 'rich Bordeaux-wine tone'.

The special finish has been developed by Sakamoto Urushi Manufacturing Co., Ltd. of Aizu-Wakamatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, and is said to increase the camera's durability.

As a result of the process, no two cameras will be the same, making them a unique possession, the company adds. The camera's specification remains unaltered from the standard version but there's no word on the intended price.

Orders will be taken from July 20 through September 20, 2011. Delivery will take four months from the receipt of order.

Leica Store Robbed - Breaking News

We're all desperate to get our hands on Lecia gear but not many of us would go as far as two apparent masked men in Lenin, Moscow. They scrapped the metal shutters, whacked the glass door down with a sledgehammers and broke into the store located in Leninsky Prospekt.

Within fifteen minutes they had trashed the place but from the images below looks like they didn't have time to lift them all.

We have serial numbers of the cameras and lenses stolen below, if you're offered any please check against these numbers and contact Leica about it here.
